What customers are saying

The 2017 Ford Focus offers good fuel economy, attractive styling, and advanced tech like backup cameras. However, tight interior space and reliability concerns, such as transmission issues, may limit its appeal for families or long-term ownership. Better suited for individual commuting with a focus on affordability.

Great car with research!

It is comfortable and easy to drive. Works very well for those of us looking for something “sportier” but not too flashy.

PROS
Cargo Space

My specific vehicle is a hatchback. Previously I owned a 2006 Focus. One of the first things I noted was that my back seats folded flat with ease. This provided a fairly large amount of trunk space. Adequate enough to fit 2 people comfortably if laying down. It surprised me a bit how much the trunk of this vehicle was capable of holding as well, compared to my previous Focus.

Braking

As with most more modern Ford cars, the stronger braking capabilities have saved me from t-boning clueless drivers more than once since owning this car. The brakes are gentle but still strong enough to halt the car at a moments notice.

Reliability

I have noticed these cars are quite versatile in different environments. They cope quite well in heavy rain and snow, granted the driver is alert and driving with care. Very rarely is it required of me to take my car for repairs aside from basic maintenance. No broken gauges, parts or otherwise as far as I have owned it. My previous Focus had a transmission that nearly outlasted the car itself. I am hoping for that reliability in this vehicle as well, though I am highly aware of the potential for transmission issues in these newer Ford Focuses.

CONS
Cabin Noise

HVAC system is VERY loud. When maxed out, almost sounds like a hand dryer. There is also a flaw in which when setting the air to top/bottom vents, the airflow becomes very weak even when set to the highest fan setting. This vehicle also very much picks up on most road noises. While it is certainly preference of the driver, you can also hear the engine quite loudly from inside the cabin. I don’t mind it at all, but it is certainly something to keep in mind.

Dashboard

Despite the car being called a “Focus”, it is without a doubt very difficult to focus on the various innumerable amount of buttons and options set on the dash. Unless you are familiar with the car right from the get go, you should expect to take some time to learn these controls before driving, as they can become a distraction to unfamiliar drivers.

Power

This car (2017 SE Hatchback) offers roughly about 140hp. This is by no means a powerful car, but it is more on the peppy side. You can definitely expect to accelerate, just not quickly. Don’t even try to pass that Camaro on your way to work, it won’t be in your favor. This car is most adequate for small families or for single person owners just looking for a reliable vehicle.

Great car. Love the pep and my manual transmission

This car for my needs but never would I have thought it would be my expectations. I was able to find this car in the manual transmission that I wanted a good color and very low miles at a great price. I put on about 4,000 miles on the car and I love it I plan on keeping it for quite some time until another focus comes along. Average around 40 miles a gallon low maintenance cost and only been in service once highly recommend this vehicle for the commuter or the first time buyer

PROS
Fuel Economy

Exceeds expectations

Cost to Maintain

Low cost of ownership

Seat Comfort

Being 6ft for I'm a bigger guy plenty of room in this vehicle

CONS
Dashboard

A little cheap feeling but okay

Cabin Noise

It's a little noisy

Interior Space

Hopefully you don't have tall rear passengers and you'll be good

Nice runaround car.

PROS
Seat Comfort

Leather seats are supported well, easy to drive 4-5 hours and not be stiff or sore. Seat heaters work well, maybe better than they need to. Heated leather steering wheel is nice.

Fuel Economy

This 2.0l is normally aspirated and has a 6-speed transmission. Average is about 28 around town but got 41.5 on a 400 mile trip to the coast and back. I see about 32-33 with some highway. Fuel tank a little small - 12.4 gallons but good for over 400 miles on a trip before needing a stop.

Technology and Entertainment

Platinum Package has most of the technology features (parking sensors, collision avoidance, headlight auto dimming , remote start). Also has upgraded Sony sound system with subwoofer.

CONS
Ride and Handling

Not a large vehicle so ride expected to be a little rough - and it is, partially due to 17” low profile tires. Handles well - had occasion to test accident avoidance and vehicle recovered very well.

Interior Space

A bit tight, but again, not a large vehicle. Sufficient space in the front, rear a little tighter - I have the 5-door hatchback. Adult 90lb Chocolate Lab can stand up in the back with the seats down and lay down and stretch out on a trip.

Power

OK - it’s not a street racer. Does have adequate acceleration around town PROVIDED you wait until the transmission returns to 1st gear at a stop. I don’t think it’s a defect, just something you have to get used to. Had a 2010 Focus 2.0 5-speed automatic and had same thing. Put over 170,000 miles on it before giving to nephews starting to drive. Last I heard, 287,000 miles on it.
