Generation Overview

The Kia Soul first appeared on America's streets in 2010 as a perky and functional SUV primed for personalization. The 2018 sits in the middle of the second generation, with the latest iteration rolling out for model year 2020. Its upright design and compact size make it ideal for packing it full of sports gear, guitar cases, or shopping bags while accommodating up to five in its two rows of seats. For getting around city streets, the 1.6L four-cylinder engine produces 130 hp controlled by a manual six-speed transmission. The next step up gives you a 2.0L motor and an available Sportmatic transmission for a more confident ride during the morning commute. If you are seeking some spirited fun behind the wheel, look into the turbocharged 1.6L engine on the ! and its 201 hp. Fold down the split back seat and discover 49.5 cubic feet of space for all your stuff. There is also a hidden compartment in the rear for stowing valuables and small items out of sight. The roof rails are ready to accept crossbars so you can expand your ability to bring oversized items on your weekend escape.

Its three trims take you from a capable commuter car to one nicely appointed with luxury upgrades. Start with the base Soul and enjoy cloth seats, cupholders, multiple auxiliary power points, and 16-inch alloy wheels. The + brings heated side mirrors, a backup camera, automatic climate control, and a cargo cover to the party. Wrap your hands around the leather-trimmed steering wheel and check out the piano black accents, leather seats, and steering wheel-mounted cruise control buttons in the !.

Do you demand a kicking playlist for your drive time? Look for a Soul that features the Audio Package that upgrades you to Harman/Kardon sound system, the UVO® infotainment system with navigation, and fast-charging USB ports.2 If the comfort of power seats is your more thing, the Technology Package includes heated front power seats, LED fog and tail lights, and blind spot detection.

Nice drive and stylish

The Souls are stylish cars, they are literally everywhere. I've had a chance to ask other Kia Soul owners about their car and they LOVE them! I was surprised that a few folks have bought at least two!

Pros

  • Technology and Entertainment: I trolled Kia Souls for past couple years. Narrowed search down to the 2nd gen, I like this body style over the latest 3rd gen. Also wanted the tech package.
  • Ride and Handling: Takes some getting used to, the Soul+ has different drive modes which I like the Sport mode best. Tighter handling, drive seems to be smoother, braking feels more controlled.

Cons

  • Cost to Maintain: Maintainance is and will be costly to keep any newer car in great running shape, that's understood and worth it. Not sure about other Soul models but mine does have slight cabin noise when driving on highway.

I’ve Got Soul

This is actually my 2nd Soul, and my 3rd Kia made vehicle. I love the Soul. It’s a comfortable ride, roomy, pull the back seats down and you have plenty of room to put things.

Pros

  • Cargo Space: I had to buy a new toilet for my house. I was able to bring it home in my Soul.
  • Seat Comfort: I love the different options the power seats give you. I have leather seats so I definitely love the heated seats and they also cool in warm weather.
  • Dashboard: Love the dash. Navigation, the options you can choose from.

Cons

  • Cabin Noise: There is cabin noise but it doesn’t drive me crazy.
