What customers are saying

The 2017 Mazda Mazda3 is praised for its reliability, excellent fuel economy, and responsive handling, which enhance driving enjoyment. Customers highlight limitations like cabin noise, compact interior, and cargo space. While some miss modern tech like GPS or Android Auto, the car balances performance and cost-effectiveness well.

It's been a great reliable car.

I have been recommending Car Max to everyone that I know. Very happy with the cost and how I am able to take my time and find the car that I want.

PROS
Power

Get enough power and drives and handles great.

CONS
Interior Space

A little small in the back seat for people who are tall.

A practical and fun car to drive!

Most small cars are boring to look at and drive, but not the Mazda 3. Great design, superb handling, good acceleration, and decent ride make any trip - short or long - a pleasure. Visibility is very good and all the controls are logically arranged and easy to operate. I have the hatchback version and with the folding rear seats, I have no problem hauling stuff from Home Depot or a big Costco run. I have owned the Mazda 3 for nearly 7 years and there have been no maintenance or repair issues. The running costs are very low - just oil changes and the normal items per Mazda's service schedule; and gas mileage is over 30 mpg combined city/highway. On the negative side, cabin noise levels are a bit elevated, the center console screen is small, and the Bluetooth interface can be temperamental at times.

PROS
Cost to Maintain

Only need to spend money on oil and filter changes. Original brakes after driving it for over 110,000 miles!

Fuel Economy

Gets over 30 mpg city/highway combined.

CONS
Cabin Noise

Elevated cabin noise - especially at highway speeds when compared to newer cars with more insulation.

Affordable Fun & Practicality

For the price, you get a car that's fun and engaging to drive, with some great features, good fuel mileage, and so far perfect reliability. If you enjoy driving, there are few other FWD cars that're as enjoyable to drive. Even if you're only in need of a basic commuter car, the Mazda3 is still quite comfortable and has everything you'll want in this category.

PROS
Ride and Handling

Rides fairly comfortably while still being very agile and responsive to driver's inputs. A couple other economy cars may be slightly more comfortable, but I feel reassured by how responsive the car is to steering input and just how well it can handle tight corners.

Reliability

So far, absolutely no reliability issues even after having driven it extremely hard through curvy, uphill mountain roads. The motor and transmission are very responsible and never seem to tire.

Fuel Economy

At 70 MPH on the freeway, I typically get high 30s in MPG, even with the larger 2.5L motor. In the city I tend to get mid-20s, but other drivers without a lead foot would probably get better mileage.

CONS
Cargo Space

Trunk space in the sedan is a little bit limited, but not unreasonably so for a compact car. A hatchback would provide more versatility.

Technology and Entertainment

The infotainment doesn't come with Android Auto or Apple Carplay from the factory, but can be upgraded by Mazda dealerships at a cost. Otherwise works just fine and I appreciate being able to use it with physical controls exclusively.

Interior Space

Plenty of space for driver and front passenger, though it's a little bit limited for rear passengers. If you have children or only rarely transport larger adults though, you'll be just fine.
