About The Toyota Corolla S

Vehicle Summary

The Toyota Corolla S is the sports version of the always-popular Toyota Corolla hatchback that prioritizes style and performance. Taking the elements that make the Toyota Corolla so popular — comfortable and practical everyday hatchback driving — and adding a sporty edge and extra styling elements makes the Corolla S a perfect all-around choice.

Are you a young driver looking for a comfortable ride through the city? Or maybe you have a young family and want something that can seat plenty of passengers and hold lots of luggage while still looking sharp and stylish? Then the tenth (2009–2013) and eleventh (2014–2016) generation Toyota Corolla S models are a great option for you.

Toyota Corolla S Generations

The Toyota Corolla S is itself one of many trim levels of the Toyota Corolla, so let's break down what the sporty S trim includes for each model year in the tenth (2009–2013) and eleventh (2014–2016) generations.

2009 Toyota Corolla S

The first year of the tenth generation of the Toyota Corolla, the 2009 Corolla S trim includes features from the LE trim — body-color side mirrors, power windows, and power door-locks — as optional extras, and comes with 16-inch steel wheels (compared to the 15-inch steel wheels on the base model), underbody spoilers, sports seats and steering wheel, fog lights, and two additional stereo speakers for the in-car entertainment system.

2010 Toyota Corolla S

The S trim package remains unchanged from 2009.

2011 Toyota Corolla S

For 2011, we see some changes to the S trim as it becomes the Corolla's top-of-the-range package. Previous features from the LE package which were only optional on the S in years prior become standard — including keyless entry, power windows and locks, variable-speed wipers, cruise control, and a six-speaker stereo system.

Exclusive to the S package for 2011 are 16-inch alloy wheels, a sports body kit with a rear spoiler, steering wheel audio controls, an upgraded trip computer, and cloth upholstery.

2012 Toyota Corolla S

A few minor tweaks for 2012, the LE package now gets the 16-inch alloy wheels and steering-wheel audio controls, as well as Bluetooth® and iPod connectivity for the six-speaker stereo system. Once again these are standard on the S, along with fog lights, a body kit and rear spoiler, enhanced upholstery, and metallic interior trim. And just like in 2011, the LE and S packages include the option of a sunroof featuring an overheard console and glasses holders.

2013 Toyota Corolla S

The 2013 Toyota Corolla S trim remains largely unchanged from 2012, with a few important tweaks. The standard features on the S which are carried over from the LE trim now include 16-inch steel wheels and a six-inch touchscreen display for the stereo system that also features iPod, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Also, new for 2013 is the optional Premium package, which is available for the Corolla S and includes a sunroof and upgraded wheels.

Of note for 2013 is the inclusion of the S Special Edition trim level which includes Entune™ navigation system, heated front seats, leather upholstery, unique paint color options, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

2014 Toyota Corolla S

A new model generation means some changes arrive for the 2014 Toyota Corolla S. Standard once again on the S model are the LE trim package features: 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, variable-speed wipers, keyless entry, cruise control, powered windows and door locks, automatic climate control, a rearview camera, and a six-speaker sound system with a six-inch touchscreen.

Exclusive to the S trim are a chrome grille, fog lights, signal repeater mirrors, sports seats in the front, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and upgraded trip computer and instrumentation. New for 2014 are two extra packages for the S model: the S Plus which includes 17-inch alloy wheels and firmer suspension settings and rear disc brakes for extra performance and a smoother ride, and the S Premium which features premium vinyl upholstery.

2015 Toyota Corolla S

Only a few tweaks for the 2015 Toyota Corolla S — it includes the same features as the 2014 model year while adding voice controls and cruise control as standard. The S trim's styling is also largely unchanged but includes enhanced wheel covers, a rear spoiler, chrome exhaust tips, and paddle shifters. There's also now the Sport Mode which gives you more power when you drive.

The S Plus and S Premium trims remain unchanged aside from a six-speed manual transmission available on the S Plus — note that this means you lose the paddle shifters, but gain the Driver Convenience package instead.

2016 Toyota Corolla S

In the last year the Corolla S was sold, the S package itself remains unchanged from 2015 as do the S Plus and S Premium trim levels.

Unique for 2016 is the S Special Edition, celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Toyota Corolla. This package includes the features of the S Plus and CVT transmission as standard, and includes 17-inch alloy wheels finished in gloss black, Special Edition badges, keyless entry/ignition, and an all-black interior with red accents. A sunroof and the Entune Premium navigation system are optional extras on the S Special Edition package.

FAQ

Q: Does Toyota still make the Corolla S?

A: No. Toyota last offered the Corolla S as part of the Corolla lineup in 2016. Since then, the S option has largely been absorbed into other trim levels in the Toyota Corolla range: the SE, XSE, XLE, etc.

Q: What type of car is the Toyota Corolla S?

A: The Toyota Corolla S is the sports variant of the ever-popular Toyota Corolla hatchback. The S model often forgoes some of the luxury equipment options, but in return offers more stylish, sporty trim packages and performance tweaks.

Q: What does the S stand for in Toyota Corolla S?

A: Very simple; the S stands for Sport.
