Generation Overview

First revealed at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, the fifth generation of the Volkswagen Passat began with the 2005 model year. A change in platform from the shared platform with the Audi A4, the new generation used a modified version of the Golf's platform, which in the all-wheel drive version changed the engine layout from longitudinal to transverse, changing the car's handling to more like a front-wheel drive vehicle. In the 2008 model year, the 1.8L inline-four engine replaced the 2.0L version, while the 2009 model year saw the end of the 4motion® all-wheel drive powertrain. The 2010 model year saw a significant mid-generation facelift, revealed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, which included changes to the exterior sheet metal, significant changes to the grille and headlight changes.
