Athletic, graceful, powerful, and beautiful: the 2019 Audi SQ5
In its second year of a new generation, Audi’s SQ5 maintains its appeal as an athletic, nimble crossover with excellent build quality. It’s powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 good for 349 horsepower, which is a 101-hp upgrade over the regular Q5. All-wheel drive is standard, as is an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The Audi SQ5 was completely redesigned and reengineered for the 2018 model year, but that hasn’t stopped Audi from continuing to improve the model. For 2019, Audi added a Premium base trim below the Premium Plus and Prestige levels. The Premium trim is still comprehensively equipped and includes 20-inch wheels, adaptive dampers, LED headlights and taillights, a power liftgate, push-button ignition, selectable driving modes, and leather seating surfaces as standard.
All Audi SQ5 trims come standard with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ integrated into an infotainment system that, unfortunately, is complicated to use. It’s a hiccup in an otherwise elegantly designed and comfortable interior.

What We Like
Interior: For easy access, we appreciate the tall door openings and generous headroom. The optional adaptive air suspension lowers the SQ5 by 1.2 inches, which may not seem like much but could be especially meaningful to those with mobility challenges. From the driver’s seat, outward visibility is very good, enhanced by sharp, clear camera displays. Audi created a usable and streamlined cabin with clever small storage compartments.
Utility: Once again, the optional air suspension comes in handy to maximize the SQ5’s utility in the form of a flexible loading height. When you’re filling up the cargo bay with a new TV or office chair or gifts for the holidays, every inch counts. Audi came up with some bright ideas for small storage solutions, too, like the tray that slides back and forth under the armrest. In all, the SQ5 has 26.8 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row and 60.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, which is about average for this class.
Comfort: Not only are the sculpted seats attractively designed and covered, they’re supremely comfortable for driving and riding. Highly adjustable (including four-way lumbar) heated seats are standard, and side bolsters hug your body at every turn. And not to overstate its importance, but the exemplary air suspension on the SQ5 smooths out the road for a comfortable ride from start to finish.
What Needs Improvement
Technology: Audi’s aesthetic is impressively modern, and the infotainment screens follow suit with clear and sharp displays. Unfortunately, the system looks better than it operates; it’s a bit more fussy than it needs to be. We were surprised to find the optional navigation function and phone integration lacking in comparison to rivals in the SQ5’s segment. We also wish the voice controls worked as well as in other vehicle entertainment systems.
