The 2022 BMW M240i gets bigger, more powerful, and new styling
The BMW 2 Series is a rear-wheel-drive-based luxury coupe that is both a replacement for the prior 1 Series and also a spiritual successor to the smaller 3 Series coupes from decades ago. It is not to be confused with the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, which is actually a front-wheel-drive-based sedan, with a "coupe-like" look.
The M240i xDrive is the sport-oriented trim of the 2 Series lineup. It includes a 382-horsepower six-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, larger brakes and wheels, and an adaptive suspension. A rear-wheel-drive M240i would be available in subsequent years. The other trim available for 2022 was the less powerful 230i, which we reviewed separately.
The 2022 BMW M240i kicks off its second generation with a full redesign. It is slightly larger and more powerful, and it has a tech-focused interior with a standard digital instrument panel. This interior was updated the following year, so it's worth comparing them to see which one you prefer. Finally, the convertible model was discontinued, along with the available manual transmission.

What We Like
Fun to drive: The M240i has excellent handling and performance. Its turbocharged six-cylinder engine makes more than enough power and feels strong in town or on the highway. The adaptive suspension helps keep the car planted in spirited driving. Braking performance is impressive and easy to control during everyday driving.
Great audio and tech: The available Harman Kardon audio system is impressive, offering clarity and well-rounded bass at high volumes. While BMW's software may require a learning curve, the controls for the media, navigation, and high-level settings are all easy to access. Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration are standard, in addition to a wireless charging pad and multiple USB-C ports.
Good visibility: The M240i's visibility is excellent for a two-door coupe. Its body pillars aren't thin, but they're placed in a way that does not obstruct the view. The glass area sits upright, too, so the rear window doesn't feel like a mail slot. Blind spots aren't likely to be an issue either.
What Needs Improvement
Tiny rear seats: Head-, leg-, and shoulder room are all great up front but much less so in the back. The rear seat is cramped and isn't likely to be comfortable for adults, even on shorter drives. Getting to the back seat requires some gymnastics that many adults simply won't, or can't, perform. The 2 Series may not be the best fit for those who regularly carry rear passengers of any size.
