2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid offers value with up to 54 mpg
Buyers looking for an affordable compact sedan with excellent fuel economy will find both values strongly represented in the 2023 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid. Unlike many economy sedans, the Elantra is boldly styled and good-looking, benefitting from a redesign for the 2021 model year. Also, this car is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick. Certain vehicles may have unrepaired safety recalls. Click here to look up a specific vehicle.
Nothing significant has changed on the Elantra Hybrid for 2023. Buyers can choose from the basic Blue trim or the luxurious, tech-loaded Limited trim. The Blue trim comes with features such as heated front seats and an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay® support. Advanced driver assistance includes automatic high beams, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and lane keeping assistance. Limited trim adds a 10.25-inch screen, ventilated seats, voice control, reverse parking assistance, and wireless device charging.
As a compact economy model, the Elantra Hybrid competes with some of the best-selling hybrids on the market, including the Toyota Prius and Corolla Hybrid. Fuel economy on all of these options is excellent, more than 50 mpg in combined driving. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

What We Like
Advanced driver assistance: Hyundai delivers an excellent driver assistance package as standard equipment on the Elantra Hybrid. Beyond the usual forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, the Elantra Hybrid offers blind-spot warning with collision avoidance assistance and rear cross-traffic collision avoidance assistance, and a full suite of lane keeping features. The list goes on with safe exit assistance and automatic high beams. Limited trim adds to this list with adaptive cruise control, reverse parking assistance, and highway driving steering assistance.
Excellent fuel economy: The basic Blue trim offers EPA-estimated 53 mpg in city driving, up to 56 mpg on the highway, and an average 54 mpg in combined city and highway driving that reflects actual usage patterns. The Limited trim doesn’t do quite so well, getting 49 mpg in the city, 52 mpg on the highway, and a combined average of 50 mpg.
However, that’s still excellent for a well-equipped economy car.Comfortable interior: The Elantra Hybrid’s front seats are comfortable and supportive, and there’s plenty of room inside. The interior is well designed, with controls placed within easy reach. Visibility and light in the interior is also excellent, and the infotainment system is straightforward to use. The Elantra also features a generous trunk for its class, with 14.2 cubic feet. That’s plenty for a weekend away with four people.
What Needs Improvement
Engine power: Because the Elantra Hybrid was optimized for fuel economy, performance has suffered. This car is slow to accelerate, or to rev up for a pass. That’s a tradeoff that hybrid owners have long accepted, but be sure to take a test drive to see if it will bother you. The value proposition of the Elantra Hybrid is reliable, affordable, and efficient transportation, not performance.
