Mazda CX-9

The second-generation Mazda CX-9 traded its V6 engine for a turbocharged four-cylinder that made almost as much power, but with dramatically better fuel economy. Mazda's tradition of building SUVs that were fun to drive and with excellent accommodations for drivers and passengers comes through in the CX-9. The second-row rear seating area is also large and comfortable, providing space for six or seven adults, depending on trim and option choices. The third row, however, is quite small and should be reserved for small children.

For most years, the CX-9 is available in four trim levels, ranging from the basic Sport trim to Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. More tech and luxury features are added at each successive trim level, but the basics of a comfortable SUV are always included with the Mazda CX-9.

The first-generation Mazda CX-9 was the Japanese automaker's initial attempt at a midsize crossover SUV. The CX-9 was known for its capable 3.7-liter V6 engine, reasonably nimble handling for a larger SUV, and for its comfortable seven-seat cabin, with rear seats large enough to carry adults. The CX-9 was also designed to be a sporty-looking SUV, in keeping with Mazda's values.

An automatic was the only option for a transmission, but buyers could choose between front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The third-row and second-row seats fold flat in the CX-9, delivering a large, functional cargo area. For technical features such as infotainment, buyers would do well to start with the second-generation CX-9, as the later years of the first generation carried only a 5.8-inch touchscreen.
