The 2023 Mini Cooper Clubman: Performance, practicality, and personality.
Minis are known for their charming looks and playful driving dynamics, but the smaller hardtop hatchbacks have always come up short regarding practicality. The solution comes in the form of the Mini Cooper Clubman, which is essentially an extended version of the iconic hatchback. It measures nine inches longer from nose to tail and features dual barn doors in the back instead of a traditional top-hinged hatch. The Clubman’s cargo capacity can handle about 22 grocery bags, which is 33% larger than the space in the four-door Mini Hardtop, and those double doors can be much easier to deal with in tight parking spots.
For 2023, the Clubman lost its manual transmission partway through production but gained colored roofs and a special Untold Edition with black or sage green paint and upholstery and distinctive brass-colored accents. Even though it’s slightly larger, the Clubman is just as fun to drive as its smaller counterparts and represents a great alternative for those who don't want to step up to an SUV.

What We Like
Sporty cornering abilities: The Clubman, and indeed any vehicle from Mini, sets itself apart from most other hatchbacks and SUVs with its sporty handling. That holds true whether you opt for the Clubman S or the John Cooper Works (JCW) model. They’re incredibly playful on a twisty road as they bound back and forth, making them a great pick for drivers seeking fun.
High-quality interior: The Clubman’s interior is unique among rivals for its retro styling that is intertwined with modern technology. The large round gauges and infotainment enclosure harken back to classic Minis, as do the toggle switches. It’s not all show, thankfully—the quality of the materials is strong enough to make it feel like a premium vehicle.
Tons of personality: Some cars are sold on practicality and others are sold on performance. The Clubman benefits from both, but personality is one of its greatest assets. Its retro-cool exterior is recognizable from a distance, and with so many available customization options (even for pre-owned models), you should be able to find one that matches your personal aesthetic.
What Needs Improvement
John Cooper Works model has a very stiff ride: Sporty handling is one of the Clubman’s best attributes, so it may make sense for some performance-minded shoppers to seek out the top JCW trim. We caution against this because the sacrifices in ride comfort are too great with too little payoff. Unless you’re on a racetrack, its cornering abilities aren’t significantly better than the Clubman S, but bumps in the road can be downright punishing.
