The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander brings comfort, convenience, and assurance

The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander is a rare breed. It’s one of the few small SUVs that offer a third row of seats, alongside the Kia Sorento and Volkswagen Tiguan. It’s also the largest consumer vehicle sold by Mitsubishi in the U.S. You might notice our wording there because the Outlander is based on the Nissan Rogue. The Outlander distinguishes itself from the Rogue by offering that third row, sportier suspension tuning, and a more generous warranty. Its 2.5-liter engine isn’t as powerful as the Rogue’s turbocharged 1.5-liter engine, though.

The big news for 2023 is the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model called the Outlander PHEV. We cover it in a separate review but the highlights include 38 miles of estimated EV range and considerably more power. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

We like the Mitsubishi Outlander for its overall comfort and large cargo capacity, but it’s held back by its underpowered engine and frustrating voice controls. We like it more than the VW Tiguan but not as much as the Kia Sorento.

5 reasons to buy the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander

What We Like

High levels of comfort: The Outlander’s suspension is tuned more for comfort than sporty handling. As a result, it ably smooths over rough roads and big bumps. This is bolstered with well-cushioned seats and a relatively quiet cabin, though the engine can sometimes get a bit loud. In the class, the VW Tiguan is about as comfortable, while you’ll feel more imperfections in the pavement with the Kia Sorento.

Large cargo capacity: With 33.5 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the middle row, you should easily fit all of your stuff in the Outlander. The cargo area is slightly bigger than the Volkswagen Tiguan’s but not quite as large as the Sorento’s. With the second-and third-row seats stowed, that balloons to 79.7 cubes, which is more than almost any other compact SUV.

Generous warranty: Mitsubishi’s basic warranty covers the Outlander for five years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. The powertrain is covered for 10 years and 100,000 miles, which ties Hyundai and Kia for the most generous in the industry. Roadside assistance is included for the first five years with no cap on mileage.

What Needs Improvement

Weak engine: The Outlander’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine produces only 181 horsepower, which is fairly weak for the class, and the engine sometimes struggles with the 3,637-pound curb weight. It requires almost 10 seconds to accelerate to 60 mph, which is slow for almost any class of vehicle. By comparison, the Tiguan gets there about a second quicker, and the Sorento’s available turbocharged engine will beat both of them with its 6.7-second time.
