The 2022 Audi A8 is available in a single trim, the 55 TFSI. In the U.S., the long-wheelbase A8 L is the only available body style, bestowing rear passengers with extra legroom compared to the overseas model.
For this model year, Audi axed the plug-in hybrid option. That leaves only the turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 making 335 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed transmission and all-wheel drive. Those wanting a zippier ride will want to take a look at the twin-turbo V8-powered S8 model, the A8’s more athletic sibling.
While the A8 is adequately powered and more than comfortably appointed inside, it suffers from a bit of a personality crisis compared to rivals from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and even upstart Genesis. In other words, while the A8 may not disappoint, its generic approach probably won’t knock your socks off.
Interior: The 2022 Audi A8 boasts large windows and slim roof pillars, which let in plenty of natural light and provide excellent visibility at the same time. Overall, materials are high-quality, including supple leather upholstery throughout. A quiet ride allows riders to enjoy the luxury experience that is expected from the brand.
Technology: Inside the cabin, the 2022 A8 looks and feels modern and future-forward, with a generous mix of features. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone connectivity comes standard even in the base model, along with integrated navigation and a stellar Bang & Olufsen® audio system that cranks out pristine sound. The A8 is also standard with driver-assist technology like a clear 360-degree camera, lane departure, forward collision mitigation, and more.
Comfort: Right up front, heated and ventilated seats cradle the driver and front passenger, while backseat passengers enjoy ample legroom with either the five- or four-seat configuration. Amenities like a heated console and armrests and even massaging seats are available in the second row. An adaptive air suspension, which is designed to raise or lower the vehicle's ride height, improves ride comfort and handling stability.
Unique value: The A8 checks the boxes for a luxury car but doesn’t offer a compelling value proposition. Its competitors, such as steady stars like Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class and BMW’s 7 Series, are leaving it behind. Audi’s luxury sedan feels more like a chauffeur’s car than one a driver might enjoy on a daily basis. This sedan is due for an infusion of creativity for the next iteration.
