Audi capitalized on the huge demand for compact SUVs with the 2009 debut of the Q5. For the 2012 model year, Audi's classy premium SUV faces a pack of rivals including the Acura RDX, BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class, Range Rover Evoque, and Volvo XC60.
The Audi Q5 makes a very convincing case for itself among the crowd. Audi's signature high-quality interior is evident, as are a stylish design, efficient and powerful engines, and refinement. It's available in four trim levels—2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.2 Premium Plus, and 3.2 Prestige—and the numbers relate to either a 211-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine or a 270-hp 3.2-liter V6. All-wheel drive comes standard. The Q5 doesn't provide quite the fun drive of higher performing rivals, but it's such a competent all-rounder it's difficult to really criticize it for that. Its only real shortcomings are relatively limited trunk space and its costly options, many via packages such as the appealing S line and Luxury packages.
