The 2023 GMC Hummer EV is surprisingly fast and comfortable
General Motors has reincarnated the Hummer name and brought it back as an electric pickup truck. But this isn't your ordinary pickup. The Hummer EV is the sort of truck you buy to stand out from the rest, show off the latest technology, and have fun on and off the road. Key features include a 5-foot bed, 12 inches of ground clearance (with the air suspension), and a CrabWalk feature that moves the truck diagonally around obstacles. The Hummer EV competes with the smaller Rivian R1T and the more traditionally truck-styled Ford F-150 Lightning.
For 2023, the 3X trim level was the only trim available. It has three electric motors and is powered by a massive 212-kWh battery pack. GMC sold a limited number of 2023 Hummer EVs with the equipment from the Edition 1, which was how all 2022 Hummer EVs were sold. Models with this package featured white paint and a black and gray interior, the features from the Extreme Off-Road package, removable clear roof panels, and unique Edition 1 instrument panel badge and infotainment animation.

What We Like
Acceleration: The Watts to Freedom (WTF) mode takes the Hummer to 60 mph in just over 3 seconds, which is mind-blowing for a vehicle this size. The Hummer is still ridiculously quick in its Normal mode, which makes it easier to manage on the open road.
Visibility: Visibility is good throughout the cabin since the windows are large and square. While the rearview mirror is small, there is a camera option that displays an image in the mirror and allows you to see out of the back without your passengers or cargo getting in the way.
Intuitive controls: Primary controls are handled via touchscreen and the menus are simple to navigate. A drive mode dial sits behind the gear selector that can activate CrabWalk and adjust the suspension height. The steering wheel controls are also easy to operate.
What Needs Improvement
Inefficient: Classified as a heavy-duty vehicle due to its weight, the Hummer EV is not required to have an official EPA consumption or range figure. In Edmunds' testing, however, it was the least efficient EV we've seen, with a whopping 57.8 kWh of electricity used (a lower number is better) for every 100 miles of driving. For reference, that's 10 kWh more than the next least efficient EV, the Rivian R1S Launch Edition (with all-terrain tires). But thanks to its large battery, Edmunds testers were able to travel about 390 miles in the Hummer EV in real-world testing.
