2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris delivers big performance in midsize package
The 2021 Mercedes-Benz Metris is the entry-level van offered by the German automaker, available in both cargo and passenger trims. It's larger and more expensive than rivals like the Ram ProMaster City and Ford Transit Connect but not quite as large as its sibling, the Sprinter. New for 2021 is a nine-speed transmission that further cements the Metris as the most enjoyable van of its size to drive, but it makes fuel economy a little worse.
The Metris delivers more than 5,000 pounds of towing capacity and 2,000 pounds of payload when properly equipped. Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. It's also larger, both in length and width, than most of its counterparts. Also new for 2021 is standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, along with optional adaptive cruise control and a nifty rearview camera.
If the van has a flaw, it's that many features, like adaptive cruise control and similar driver aids, are optional. The Metris also requires premium fuel, making the already pricey van a little more expensive at the pump.

What We Like
Performance: The turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides impressive acceleration and is now paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that makes the Metris much more fun to drive than its competitors. Handling is also smoother and more refined than most vans, making the Metris pleasant to drive.
Utility: If you're looking for more payload and towing capacity than the Transit or ProMaster City can offer, the Metris delivers. It's also wider and longer than either of its competitors, so there's plenty of room for all of your cargo.
Tech: Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are newly standard features and can be accessed with a basic but functional seven-inch touchscreen. Other nifty new features are optional, like adaptive cruise control and the rearview camera.
What Needs Improvement
Standard features: While the Metris is available with plenty of impressive features, not many come standard. That is particularly true for driver aids like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and automatic emergency braking.
