The Polestar 2 is a high-riding electric sedan with a hint of SUV in its design

The Polestar 2 is an electric sedan that seems to be under the impression it’s part SUV. Its blunt front end, elevated suspension, and square shape provide a quirky style, and it doesn’t look like anything else on the road. Polestar itself is a new division of Volvo’s parent company, one focused entirely on electrified vehicles.

Motivating the Polestar 2 are two electric motors, one at each axle. Punch the accelerator and hold on—the all-wheel-drive Polestar 2 accelerates rapidly, and sharp handling encourages you to have fun behind the wheel. One limitation is driving range. With an EPA-estimated 233 miles per charge, the Polestar 2 trails rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model 3. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

Inside, you’ll find an elegantly furnished cabin, though one that borders on being a little too austere. At the center of the dashboard resides a Google-based touchscreen that’s technologically impressive even if there’s a learning curve to grasp its various functions.

Launch Edition:

What We Like

Performance: The dual-motor powertrain gives the Polestar 2 awesome acceleration and makes highway passing maneuvers a cinch. Some might find the ride a bit too firm, though it gives the car a planted feel and is nicely matched to the agile steering. Quite simply, this car is fun to drive.

Google-based infotainment system: Using an Android-based operating system, the infotainment unit is slick and feels state of the art. One of the most useful features is that the Polestar 2’s navigation runs via Google Maps. The graphics are outstanding and the instructions are crystal-clear.

Trunk volume: Open the rear hatchback and you’re greeted by a trunk with about 14 cubic feet of space. The space can easily be expanded by folding down the split rear seatback. Because the Polestar 2 doesn’t stand as tall as an SUV, loading things aboard requires less of a stretch.

What Needs Improvement

Rivals have more range: There are a couple of quibbles we have with the Polestar 2, including its snug second row. Yet it’s the paltry 233 miles of range that stands out most of all.

This is significantly less than what many competitors offer.
