The 2022 Toyota Mirai powers luxury with hydrogen
The 2022 Toyota Mirai is unique: It's a luxury car with an upscale design that drives its wheels with electric motors, but instead of plugging into a wall socket for electricity, you fill the car with hydrogen, which it then puts through a chemical reaction to produce electricity. It’s a green-conscious choice, but Toyota limited sales of the Mirai to California and Hawaii, where hydrogen is available. The advantage is that hydrogen fill-ups are currently much faster than charging an EV. Cargo space also suffers due to the bulk of the hydrogen tanks.
The comfortable seat, smooth ride, and upscale materials feel more Lexus than Toyota, and the Mirai is pleasant to drive, but without the performance of most gas, hybrid, or battery-electric luxury cars. If you have access to hydrogen fuel, and you want a very comfortable luxury sedan with unique green cred, the Mirai is worth a look. But there’s no escaping the fact that, for now at least, hydrogen cars like the Mirai are for a very niche audience.

What We Like
Interior: Toyota put a lot of work into making the Mirai feel special, and it comes off as more luxurious than other Toyota products. The cabin is also quite roomy, but only if you stick to four passengers or fewer.
Range and fueling: The Mirai offers an EPA-estimated range of up to 402 miles
, and filling up with hydrogen only takes a few minutes. That gives the Mirai an edge over battery-electric cars.Features: With only two trim levels available, the Mirai comes packed with comfort and technology features, along with a full suite of driver aids, even in its “base” XLE trim. The Limited trim has features you’d expect from more exclusive luxury brands.
What Needs Improvement
Hydrogen availability: Hydrogen fuel gives the Mirai an edge over battery-electric cars, but finding that fuel can be a problem. Fueling stations are limited to a few states, and there hasn’t yet been a concerted effort to spread them more widely. Make sure you have access to hydrogen before you consider a Mirai, and when planning road trips.
