About the Ford Fusion Energi
If the idea of owning an electric car appeals to you but you're not quite ready to make the total switch to electric power, a plug-in hybrid like the Ford Fusion Energi can be a sensible choice. This plug-in-hybrid version of the Ford Fusion sedan offers seating for five passengers and was introduced as part of the Fusion's third generation (2013-2020). When its lithium-ion battery is charged, the Energi can run purely on electric power—and when the battery drains, the Energi automatically shifts to drawing power from its hybrid engine.
Combine all this with some generous standard features like heated front seats, an 11-speaker sound system, and three information screens, and it's easy to envision yourself behind the wheel of a used Ford Fusion Energi.

Q: Does the Ford Fusion Energi charge while driving?
A: Yes, the Ford Fusion Energi uses regenerative braking to intermittently recharge while driving. However, you should not expect to achieve a full battery charge using regenerative braking alone; in order to optimize electric range, the battery will need to be fully charged using an electrical outlet or charging station.
Q: What is the difference between the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Ford Fusion Energi?
A: The Ford Fusion Hybrid uses a traditional hybrid engine but does not have the ability to run exclusively on electric power for any period of time. The Ford Fusion Energi, on the other hand, is equipped with a traditional hybrid engine but also has a larger lithium-ion battery that allows it to run on all-electric power until its battery runs out. At that point, the traditional hybrid engine takes back over.
Q: How many miles can a Ford Fusion Energi go?
A: Range and fuel economy estimates can vary based on model year and other factors. However, the 2018 Ford Fusion Energi with 2.0L four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and lithium-ion battery pack has an EPA-estimated electric-only range of 21 miles on a full charge and an EPA-estimated range of 610 miles with a full charge and full tank of gas.1 Meanwhile, the 2018 Fusion Energi gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg combined when running only on its hybrid engine and no electric power.2
Q: Do you need to plug in a Ford Fusion Energi?
A: No; if you don't charge the Fusion Energi battery, it will simply run like a traditional hybrid using its 2.0L four-cylinder engine and electric motor.
1EPA-estimated 21-mile range based on 97 MPGe combined estimate (electric); additional EPA-estimated 610-mile extended range based on CarMax Confidential 42 mpg combined estimate (gas). Range figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new and assume a full battery charge and full tank of gas (if applicable). Range will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
2Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

Reviews for Ford Fusion Energi
I love my car !
Pro(s) of having my Ford Fusion Energi 2016 : I love that fact that when I turn my car on I don’t hear an engine start. I love that my seats are leather and that they warm themselves and my steering wheel. I also love that I can run on energy alone if wanted. I have great MPG. Cons of having my Ford Fusion Energi 2016 : I have the tiniest trunk, not mad about it but the ‘Energi’ battery is in the trunk and takes a HUGE chunk of the space.
- Fuel Economy: It’s the best I’ve had!
- Reliability: It’s always available for energy only or gas.
- Technology and Entertainment: I love my sound aystem
- Cargo Space: I wish my trunk was bigger
Luxury Hybrid for the price of stripped gas burner
10 years ago I bought a hybrid that was new but a year old. Gas prices had dropped so it was a bargain about 10K Below list. This ca was similar circumstances. People rent hybrids for logn trips, to save gas, at a premium rental price. Low mileage, luxury plug-in hybrid at nearly 20K below list. The bonus. I bought it at CarMax, no hostles or cons. From test drive to drivie, out the front door in 3 hours.
- Safety: Top rated
- Fuel Economy: 40 to 90 MPG
- Ride and Handling: smooth as silk on eletric handles like a sports car
- Cargo Space: Battreries crowd out normal Fusion trunk space
Gas saver at a great price!
This car is perfect for errands, short to medium distances. Wouldn’t use it for very far drives, like more than a day trips because of the lack of space in the trunk. Using this car the right way can get you close to 100mpg!! As a con I would also mention that the high voltage battery only last 21-22 miles in good driving conditions without the a/c or the heater. Using those will cut that milage in half. Regeneration breaking plays a big part of this car fuel economy and it shows you your breaking score after every stop. Overall I’m very satisfied, because of the look and technology integrated in this car.
- Fuel Economy:
- Technology and Entertainment: Remote start from my cell phone and a lot more throu the app
- Styling: I love the looks of it.
- Cargo Space: Very small trunk since the high voltage battery is in there
- Power: Don’t buy this car if u r a street racer... it’s also a hybrid
