About the Ford Fusion Energi
Vehicle Summary
If the idea of owning an electric car appeals to you but you're not quite ready to make the total switch to electric power, a plug-in hybrid like the Ford Fusion Energi can be a sensible choice. This plug-in-hybrid version of the Ford Fusion sedan offers seating for five passengers and was introduced as part of the Fusion's third generation (2013-2020). When its lithium-ion battery is charged, the Energi can run purely on electric power—and when the battery drains, the Energi automatically shifts to drawing power from its hybrid engine.
Combine all this with some generous standard features like heated front seats, an 11-speaker sound system, and three information screens, and it's easy to envision yourself behind the wheel of a used Ford Fusion Energi.

FAQ
Q: Does the Ford Fusion Energi charge while driving?
A: Yes, the Ford Fusion Energi uses regenerative braking to intermittently recharge while driving. However, you should not expect to achieve a full battery charge using regenerative braking alone; in order to optimize electric range, the battery will need to be fully charged using an electrical outlet or charging station.
Q: What is the difference between the Ford Fusion Hybrid and the Ford Fusion Energi?
A: The Ford Fusion Hybrid uses a traditional hybrid engine but does not have the ability to run exclusively on electric power for any period of time. The Ford Fusion Energi, on the other hand, is equipped with a traditional hybrid engine but also has a larger lithium-ion battery that allows it to run on all-electric power until its battery runs out. At that point, the traditional hybrid engine takes back over.
Q: How many miles can a Ford Fusion Energi go?
A: Range and fuel economy estimates can vary based on model year and other factors. However, the 2018 Ford Fusion Energi with 2.0L four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and lithium-ion battery pack has an EPA-estimated electric-only range of 21 miles on a full charge and an EPA-estimated range of 610 miles with a full charge and full tank of gas.1 Meanwhile, the 2018 Fusion Energi gets an EPA-estimated 42 mpg combined when running only on its hybrid engine and no electric power.2
Q: Do you need to plug in a Ford Fusion Energi?
A: No; if you don't charge the Fusion Energi battery, it will simply run like a traditional hybrid using its 2.0L four-cylinder engine and electric motor.
1EPA-estimated 21-mile range based on 97 MPGe combined estimate (electric); additional EPA-estimated 610-mile extended range based on CarMax Confidential 42 mpg combined estimate (gas). Range figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new and assume a full battery charge and full tank of gas (if applicable). Range will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
2Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.
