2024 Subaru Impreza is a versatile, practical hatchback

The Subaru Impreza is redesigned for 2024, giving the all-wheel-drive hatchback a face-lift and improving some of its tech offerings. The sedan is no more; the only flavor the 2024 Impreza comes in is hatchback. Like all Subarus, the Impreza comes standard with all-wheel drive, making it a practical and versatile option for those looking for a little extra capability when driving in wet or slippery conditions.

The Impreza's acceleration remains a bit lackluster as does its fuel economy. It gets 30 miles per gallon, according to the EPA, which is worse than competitors like the Honda Civic and Toyota Camry. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See fueleconomy.gov. In Edmunds' real-world testing, the Impreza failed to live up to its EPA-stated expectations.

But the Impreza offers a roomy interior and plenty of storage space for a vehicle of its size. The Sport and RS trims come with a new-for-this-year 11.7-inch touchscreen, and on those higher trims, you also get both USB-C and USB-A charging ports in addition to a wireless charging pad.

What is new for the 2024 Subaru Impreza?

  • The Limited and Premium trims have been discontinued for 2024.
  • Impreza trims have been upgraded with Turbo Charged Engine as standard equipment this year.
  • The Base trim now comes with Alloy Wheels and Satellite Radio Ready as standard equipment.

What We Like 

  • Lots of storage: The hatchback design makes it easy to load all your gear into the Impreza's roomy cargo area. You'll get 20.4 cubic feet of storage with the seats up, or 56 cubic feet with the back seats folded down. That's a little less than what you'll get with the Civic hatchback, but more than with rivals from Mazda and Mini. 

  • Roomy interior: The Impreza offers impressive headroom and legroom for passengers in the front and back seats. Even taller passengers will generally have enough room to keep them from feeling cramped or claustrophobic.  

  • Impressive technology: Wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ are standard features on every Impreza. If you upgrade to the Sport or RS trim level, you'll also get an 11.7-inch touchscreen. The Impreza also comes stocked with multiple USB ports, so charging your device is a snap.  

 What Needs Improvement 

  • Fuel economy: The EPA-estimated fuel economy is 30 mpg combined for the standard Impreza and 29 mpg combined for the RS.

    That's a little worse than the Impreza's competitors, and when Edmunds tested the RS, it was below the EPA-estimated number.
