I don’t drive it daily. I use it more like one would use a motorcycle. Warm, dry days, with the top down. I wouldn’t recommend this car as a daily driver, it has no cabin storage and the trunk is really small. If you want a nice reliable commuter car buy something else. If you want a Miata buy one of these. This is my third Miata and it by far the best Mazda has made!

The engine and transmission are matched really well and maximize performance. It handles really well with a lot of positive road feel and great overall balance. Even tough it's completely stock, I autocross with it on occasion and easily keep up with much more expensive cars. The Bose stereo system is really nice but could use a little more power. There is quite a bit of road noise at higher speeds with the top up and some wind turbulence with the top down but that just comes with driving a sports car. And 35 MPG on average certainly doesn't hurt, especially in California, land of the high gas taxes!

This is my second Miata, they make great commuter cars as well as fun weekend toys - they're reliable, the handling is great, and the look good. They are smaller than a typical sedan, so they don't have a lot of interior space or luggage space. Obviously, you should make sure you fit comfortably and can see out of it before buying. Similarly if you have to haul kids around, or a lot of parcels every day, then a two seat roadster might not be the right car for you. Fuel economy is pretty good, I'm getting mid-20's to low 30's depending on how much town and open road driving I'm doing. It's not the highest mpg rating but it's pretty good for a sports car.

About The Mazda Miata

Overview

Are you looking for a roadster that provides you with premium features and a high level of control over the road? The Mazda Miata has been a mainstay on the roadster scene since its 1989 debut. You can find versions with both a soft and hard top depending on your preference. Each generation started with the idea of keeping the car and driver in unison as much as possible. The MX-5 gives you a multitude of features not typically found in sports cars. You can have all the comfort generally found in sedans housed in a powerful two-seater roadster designed to take you almost anywhere you wish to travel.

Popular Years

2006-2014 (Third Generation Mazda Miata)

The 2013 Mazda Miata line replaced the Touring trim from previous years with the Club trim. The vehicle maintained the 2.0L DOHC four-cylinder engine capable of 167 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque for automatics, making it responsive and flexible to drivers looking for a high-level roadster. The MX-5’s 50:50 front-to-weight distribution also enhances your levels of balance while riding in the car. 2014’s MX-5 continued to provide these features and marked the end of the third generation of Mazda Miata.

2013 and 2014 Standard Features and Specs

  • Advanced Keyless Entry and Start
  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • 17-inch dark gunmetal alloy wheels
  • Six-disc CD changer
  • Automatic Climate Control

2015-2018 (Fourth Generation Mazda Miata)

The 2015 Mazda Miata maintained the 167 hp engine from the previous generation. It can be found in three distinct trims — Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. Standard features on all trims include halogen headlights, interior illumination throughout the vehicle including the trunk, and a rear window defogger with a timer.

The 2016 MX-5 Miata received a redesigned shape giving it more distinct curves over the previous 2015 model. It also featured smaller wheel arches and a more powerful look, making sure the eyes of other drivers always follow you as you speed off down the road. Mazda also reconfigured the center console and updated the steering wheel to feature leather wrapping and add audio and speed controls. No more fumbling around trying to change the radio station while driving!

Mazda rolled out the MX-5 RF, or “Retractable Fastback” version in 2017. The intent was to push beyond the restraints of typical convertibles and hardtops for something unique and innovative that gave drivers the benefits of both. Just press a button to retract your hardtop roof in around 13 seconds.

2015-2018 Standard Features and Specs

  • 155 hp engine
  • LED Headlights and Taillights
  • Cruise Control
  • Power door locks with speed sensor
  • Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming

Most bang for the buck!

This is a small car so it's not for everyone but it is so much fun to drive!

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: 35 MPG in a car that's so much fun to drive!
  • Ride and Handling: Even completely stock, this car handles like a dream!
  • Reliability: This is my third Mazda sports car. From old to new, Mazda knows how to build a reliable sports car.

Cons

  • Cargo Space: This is a small car so don't plan on hauling much in it.
  • Cabin Noise: There is quite a bit of wind noise with the top up and some turbulence with it down.
  • Interior Space: I'm 6' and fit OK, It probably would not work for someone much taller.

- Cameron Pallotta, 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Great little sports car

Fun to drive, good fuel economy, reliable.

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: Nice steering, great roadholding. Very fun to drive even in traffic, makes the morning commute enjoyable
  • Reliability: Miatas are well known for reliability - my last one was very reliable, and my understanding is the current model is also reliable. I've not had mine long enough to really know, but it has run faultlessly so far in all weathers
  • Styling: Looks sleek

Cons

  • Cabin Noise: Can get lots of wind noise with top up, engine noise filters in as well. Not as quiet as a sedan
  • Cargo Space: Trunk is large for the size of the car, but it's still quite small. Center console storage is about big enough for a mobile phone and a pen. Glovebox and storage box behind seats are fairly large
  • Visibility: Hard to see out of with top up (most convertibles are), but also with top down, as seat backs/headrests are quite tall.

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: So much fun to drive. Puts a smile on my face every time.
  • Cost to Maintain:
  • Reliability: It’s a Mazda

Cons

  • Interior Space: No storage in doors, no glove box, no storage.
  • Cargo Space: It’s a Miata
  • Cabin Noise: Convertibles are noisy, even with the top up.
