I really enjoy driving Miatas, and my latest one that I purchased this year is even better than the earlier ones. Very smooth ride, but what I have always liked best is the responsiveness of the steering and acceleration and the really good excellent way it holds the road on turns and curves. My current Miata is my first retractable hardtop and I like the convenience. I was pleasantly surprised to find a bit more trunk space in this car over its predecessors. People have started conversations with me about the car in parking lots and so forth which is a very pleasant experience. Good on gas, and among all four of my Miatas I have needed almost no repairs.

Had a Toyota MR2 Spyder prior to this, which I dearly loved, but the Miata is more refined - the steering and braking are like glue on velvet. In terms of comfort, this car is a great fit for a short/petite person like me. All the controls are easily within reach and I never feel cramped. Dashboard is great - traditional yet sporty - none of that crazy futuristic stuff. With major road bumps, you'll hear loud bangs inside the cabin, but you will also notice that road bumps will not bounce you or sway you in this car, like in other cars. It handles dips in the road with unbelievable stability.

I look forward to finding an empty windy road whenever I can and just throwing it into the corners. The sense of confidence it provides and how solid and planted it feels in all conditions. Slowing down for a corner seems so antiquated now. I do have to think twice about making any purchase as the cargo space is extremely limited. Also the interior does get a bit loud on a rough road since with the convertible soft top you are basically driving in a drum. I don't believe there is such a thing as a perfect car, but this is as close as it gets. The few downsides are minor compared to all of the benefits such as Japanese reliability and the sense of fun this car distills in you.

This is my second Miata, they make great commuter cars as well as fun weekend toys - they're reliable, the handling is great, and the look good. They are smaller than a typical sedan, so they don't have a lot of interior space or luggage space. Obviously, you should make sure you fit comfortably and can see out of it before buying. Similarly if you have to haul kids around, or a lot of parcels every day, then a two seat roadster might not be the right car for you. Fuel economy is pretty good, I'm getting mid-20's to low 30's depending on how much town and open road driving I'm doing. It's not the highest mpg rating but it's pretty good for a sports car.

About The Mazda Miata

Overview

Are you looking for a roadster that provides you with premium features and a high level of control over the road? The Mazda Miata has been a mainstay on the roadster scene since its 1989 debut. You can find versions with both a soft and hard top depending on your preference. Each generation started with the idea of keeping the car and driver in unison as much as possible. The MX-5 gives you a multitude of features not typically found in sports cars. You can have all the comfort generally found in sedans housed in a powerful two-seater roadster designed to take you almost anywhere you wish to travel.

Popular Years

2006-2014 (Third Generation Mazda Miata)

The 2013 Mazda Miata line replaced the Touring trim from previous years with the Club trim. The vehicle maintained the 2.0L DOHC four-cylinder engine capable of 167 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque for automatics, making it responsive and flexible to drivers looking for a high-level roadster. The MX-5’s 50:50 front-to-weight distribution also enhances your levels of balance while riding in the car. 2014’s MX-5 continued to provide these features and marked the end of the third generation of Mazda Miata.

2013 and 2014 Standard Features and Specs

  • Advanced Keyless Entry and Start
  • Six-speed manual transmission
  • 17-inch dark gunmetal alloy wheels
  • Six-disc CD changer
  • Automatic Climate Control

2015-2018 (Fourth Generation Mazda Miata)

The 2015 Mazda Miata maintained the 167 hp engine from the previous generation. It can be found in three distinct trims — Sport, Club, and Grand Touring. Standard features on all trims include halogen headlights, interior illumination throughout the vehicle including the trunk, and a rear window defogger with a timer.

The 2016 MX-5 Miata received a redesigned shape giving it more distinct curves over the previous 2015 model. It also featured smaller wheel arches and a more powerful look, making sure the eyes of other drivers always follow you as you speed off down the road. Mazda also reconfigured the center console and updated the steering wheel to feature leather wrapping and add audio and speed controls. No more fumbling around trying to change the radio station while driving!

Mazda rolled out the MX-5 RF, or “Retractable Fastback” version in 2017. The intent was to push beyond the restraints of typical convertibles and hardtops for something unique and innovative that gave drivers the benefits of both. Just press a button to retract your hardtop roof in around 13 seconds.

2015-2018 Standard Features and Specs

  • 155 hp engine
  • LED Headlights and Taillights
  • Cruise Control
  • Power door locks with speed sensor
  • Bluetooth® hands-free phone and audio streaming

Awesome car fun to drive

its just an all around fun car to drive.

- David Buttero, 2012 Mazda MX-5-Miata

2010 Miata Grand Touring

We purchased a 2010 Miata Grand Touring Soft Top with just under 5,000 miles. The price was less the retail price used by our credit union, so in that respect, it was a fair deal. We enjoy the features on the car like the sound system and the keyless start. It handles great with excellent accelleration for a 4 cylinder. If you do not want to use the stability control, you have the option of switching that off for unassisted driving. We have squeezed out about 28 miles per gallon by shifting in the 3000 to 3500 rpm range with the 6 speed manual shift. That is encouraging because we know we can push it a little harder without draining the tank. We have already added color keyed splash guards to dress it up a little. Although it is tight on space, we gave it 5 stars for comfort because the seats offer good support and are heated for winter.

- Miata Fan, 2010 Mazda MX-5-Miata

If you are reading this...Buy one.

The interior is kinda cheap and has a few squeaks. The carpet is rat fur glued to plastic. The radio is not top notch... Other than that this car will exceed every expectation you could reasonably have. It is a sports car, not a luxury car. It's not about power, it's about balance and handling. It has the best brakes ever sold on a production car. All those glowing reviews you have read are true. Plus, it's reliable transportation. My '06 that I bought new has 70,000 miles on it, about 3000 of those miles were on the track at full speed. Aside from wear and tear on tires and brakes it has not been in the shop for other than scheduled maintenance. Now get off the internet and go buy one. You won't regret it.
