2019 Ford Edge gets an upgraded drivetrain for improved performance
The 2019 Ford Edge is a two-row midsize SUV offered in four trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium, and ST. The Edge's two-row seating arrangement limits passenger capacity but ensures plenty of room for up to five adults and their cargo. A new turbocharged engine makes 250 horsepower and is paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel drive is optional on all trims except the top-line ST, which comes with a 335-horsepower V6, stiffer suspension tuning, and standard all-wheel drive. While the base SE model benefits from the more powerful standard drivetrain and additional driver-assist technology like blind-spot warning, the mid grade SEL adds desirable features such as power seats, dual-zone climate control, and Ford's SYNC® 3 infotainment system.
The Edge's balance of plentiful passenger seating and abundant cargo space makes it an effective hauler for families that don't need a third row. Its new, more powerful standard engine keeps it competitive with rivals like the Chevrolet Equinox and Nissan Murano.

What We Like
Comfort: With a cabin that's quiet even at highway speeds, comfortable seating, and smooth ride quality, the Ford Edge is pleasant for both short errands and long road trips. The performance-oriented ST moves the Edge from comfy to sporty, with quicker acceleration and stiffer suspension tuning that doesn't compromise passenger comfort.
Storage: As a midsize SUV with only two rows of seats, the Ford Edge provides plenty of room for both passengers and cargo. Second-row passengers will have all the legroom and headroom they could want, and there's still almost 40 cubic feet of cargo space behind them. A two-tier center console offers effective storage for smaller objects.
Technology: The Edge's long list of standard advanced driver-assist tech includes automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, blind-spot warning, and automatic high beams. Standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ allow easy access to personalized music, contacts, and navigation guidance. Ford's SYNC® 3 system adds additional features, including an effective voice control system.
What Needs Improvement
Performance: The top-trim ST version of the Ford Edge has enough power and poise to be a true performance SUV, but the standard engine and transmission tuning feel slightly overtaxed, especially with multiple passengers and cargo at freeway speeds. Quicker downshifts from the eight-speed automatic transmission would help, though putting the Edge in Sport mode somewhat alleviates the issue.
