2021 Ford Edge aging gracefully as a capable and competitive family SUV
The 2021 Ford Edge isn't the freshest entry in the two-row midsize SUV category, but its combination of comfort, space, and technology keeps it in the running as a viable family SUV. Sitting above the compact Ford Escape and below the larger three-row Explorer in the automaker's SUV lineup, the Edge trims start at base SE and continue through the midrange SEL, sporty-looking ST-Line, luxurious Titanium, and performance-oriented ST. Most models are powered by a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels through an eight-speed automatic. All-wheel drive is available with every trim except the top-line ST model, which includes not only standard all-wheel drive but also a 335-horsepower V6 engine and stiffer suspension tuning.
The 2021 Ford Edge blends a compelling mix of useful interior space, comfortable seating, and advanced technology, the latter bolstered this year by Ford's new SYNC® 4 infotainment interface and standard 12-inch central touchscreen. The Edge also delivers a smooth ride, with the sporty ST among the more fun-to-drive SUVs in the midsize crossover segment.

What We Like
Comfort: SUV shoppers looking for a smooth ride that maintains its composure in corners will enjoy the standard Ford Edge's driving dynamics. It's not as agile as more expensive European crossovers, but the balance between ride quality and secure handling is a strong selling point. Performance fans can step up to the ST model for improved acceleration and nimble handling.
Storage: As a midsize SUV with only two rows of seats, the Ford Edge provides plenty of room for both passengers and cargo. Second-row passengers will have all the legroom and headroom they could want, and there's still almost 40 cubic feet of storage space behind them. Child safety seat mounts are plentiful and easily accessible.
Technology: The 2021 Ford Edge is several years past its last redesign, but Ford injected new life into the SUV with the all-new SYNC 4 infotainment system and larger, 12-inch touchscreen as standard equipment. Additional standard features include a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and driver-assist technology like automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and automatic high beams.
What Needs Improvement
Performance: The top-trim, ST version of the Ford Edge has enough power and poise to be a true performance SUV, but the standard engine and transmission tuning feels slightly overtaxed, especially with multiple passengers and cargo at freeway speeds. Quicker downshifts from the eight-speed automatic transmission would help, though putting the Edge in Sport mode somewhat mitigates the issue.
