2018 Genesis G80 adds sportiness to its luxury and value equation

The Genesis G80 already boasted an impressive level of luxury features and advanced technology, but for 2018 Genesis ups the G80's game with a new 3.3T performance model, which joins the existing 3.8 V6 base model and 5.0 Ultimate V8 premium version. While the 5.0 Ultimate is well outfitted, with features like active LED headlights and a head-up display, even the base 3.8 model comes with standard adaptive cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen, and leather upholstery. The 3.3T sits between the 3.8 and 5.0, offering a turbocharged V6 engine and an adaptive suspension to liven up the G80's driver engagement. All models feature an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive available on every trim.

The G80 may not (yet) possess the brand equity of German or Japanese luxury sedans, but everything from its exterior styling to its interior materials quality to its advanced technology puts the G80 on even footing with more established players, all at a lower cost. That translates to excellent value.

5 reasons to buy the 2018 Genesis G80

What We Like

Comfort: Everything from its soft-yet-supportive seats to its placid cabin environment validates the G80 as a genuine luxury sedan. An effective climate control system is bolstered by intuitive controls and a straightforward infotainment system featuring standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto. Visibility and rear seat headroom take a hit from the G80's sleek exterior design, but the overall driving experience is superb.

Technology: High-tech features like adaptive cruise control, heated seats, automatic high beams, and dual USB ports come standard on the base 3.8 model. Additional features, like LED headlights, a head-up display, a 9.2-inch touchscreen, and a 17-speaker Lexicon audio system are available, as is an adaptive suspension for the 3.3T Sport trim.

Performance: The standard 3.8-liter V6 and available 5.0-liter V8 deliver capable and refined motivation, while the standard suspension tuning makes for a composed ride. For 2018 the new 3.3T Sport trim adds dynamic handling to the G80's pedigree, giving performance enthusiasts a reason to consider it over German rivals.

What Needs Improvement

Visibility: Outward forward visibility is somewhat hindered by thick front roof pillars, while rearward sightlines suffer from thick rear pillars, though small porthole windows provide a bit of relief in back. The G80's standard blind-spot warning system and rear camera help offset the issue, as does an available 360-degree exterior camera to ease parking maneuvers.
