The 2018 Kia Sportage SUV offers features, space and style

Fresh off a redesign the previous year, the 2018 Kia Sportage compact SUV has the features, space and style to make it a competitive choice. Available in front- or all-wheel drive, the Sportage’s comfortable and quiet ride, refined and high-quality interior and roomy back seat put it a cut above.

The well-equipped base Sportage LX had an option package that added modern smartphone integration with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, and another that added basic driver assist features, such as automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic warning systems, and lane departure warning. Those features and more are standard on the mid-level EX and top-line SX Turbo, along with a turbocharged engine in the SX Turbo, but it’s useful when shopping to know that even the base model had those features available.

The two primary downsides are cargo space and fuel economy. The 30.7 cu-ft of cargo space behind the rear seatbacks is smaller than class leaders, and the EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined score trails the Honda CR-V (28 mpg) and Nissan Rogue (29 mpg). Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Fuel economy may vary for reasons like driving conditions and vehicle history. Unless specified, figures are for vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission. See

5 reasons to buy the 2018 Kia Sportage

What We Like

Comfort: From the cushy seats and the compliant suspension to the quiet interior, the Kia Sportage is a standout when it comes to comfort in your daily drive or on a road trip. Heated and cooled front seats are available, and the overall quiet ambiance gives the Sportage an upscale feel.

Roominess: Concurrent with the interior comfort is the room. There’s plenty of headroom for tall adults in the front and rear, and even rear legroom is sufficient for tall passengers, at least for shorter trips.

Technology: The base Sportage is available with options packages that give it a solid foundation when it comes to modern convenience and driver assist features. Any Sportage with the larger touchscreen (7-inch versus 5-inch) has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, and we recommend keeping an eye out for it. Additionally, while the Sportage doesn’t offer adaptive cruise control, the automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are great to have.

What Needs Improvement

Fuel Economy: While the 2018 Sportage nails a lot of things, fuel economy is a tough-to-overlook shortcoming. Other vehicles in this class simply do better, and if you want the extra power from the turbocharged engine, you’ll pay for it at the pump with an EPA-combined estimate of 23 mpg.

A silver lining for the turbo is that it takes regular unleaded gasoline, rather than demanding more expensive premium fuel.
