2024 Mini Cooper makes the manual transmission widely available
If you're hunting for a modern Mini Cooper with a stick shift, you're in luck. A manual transmission is available on all 2024 Mini Cooper trim levels after making its return in 2023. Even if you're happy to let the car do the shifting for you, there's still a lot to like about the pint-size phenom.
There are many available options on the Mini Cooper. There are two different engines (a three-cylinder and a peppier four-cylinder), a pair of special editions (Seaside and Resolute), and a total of seven trims. The base trim (Cooper) is light on standard equipment, so if you want specific features, including many driver aids, make sure the model you're looking at has them equipped.
Of course, even in base trim, the Cooper is fun to drive and easy to park. Its fuel economy depends greatly on how you use the gas pedal, but you can coax many miles out of its small tank when you're driving on the highway (and in eco mode).

What We Like
Fun to drive: If you find a model with an upgraded engine (S trim and higher), the Mini Cooper can be a blast to drive. It's surprisingly quick, easily pulling away from stoplights or merging onto crowded freeways. The steering makes the Cooper, even with the base engine, fun to navigate in tight parking lots and curvy roads alike.
Quality interior: The upscale interior of the Mini Cooper is a good reminder that BMW is building these vehicles. It's not exactly plush, but the Cooper interior has the look and feel of a luxury sports car.
Fuel economy: As noted before, the Mini Cooper's fuel economy and range can vary dramatically depending on how you drive. If you're leaning on the gas pedal, expect disappointing fuel economy. If you're maintaining a consistent, reasonable speed on a long road trip, you might just be blown away by it.
What Needs Improvement
Storage: You're not buying a Mini Cooper for its storage capacity, but be forewarned: It's limited. You'll get only 8.7 cubic feet of storage in the trunk, about half the space in many sedans, though folding down the rear seats will help. The back seat is also quite cramped, so adult passengers won't want to spend much time back there.
