Porsche has long touted its Cayenne as the sportiest choice among SUVs, but some rivals have gotten very close to it in recent years. That explains Porsche's addition of the Cayenne Coupe Turbo GT to the model line for 2022. This most focused of Cayennes might not be the most powerful—that honor is reserved for the mighty Turbo S E-Hybrid—but the 631-hp Turbo GT has been working out, with a new suspension, new brakes, more power, and specific settings for its chassis systems. And with all that, Porsche has taken the fastest SUV lap accolade from the Lamborghini Urus around Germany's Nurburgring.
What does that corporate posturing mean to most of us? Truthfully, not a lot, but it does underline that the Cayenne is among the sharpest-driving SUVs you can buy whichever engine you pick. Prestige and brand cachet remain very high, too. So while the Cayenne might not be the most spacious, most comfortable, or cheapest SUV or SUV coupe out there, it remains one of the best to drive, own, or—for the majority of us—desire.
The 2022 Porsche Cayenne is a luxury midsize SUV with the performance of a sports car. From the engine's horsepower and throaty sound to the active suspension and big brakes, you get an SUV that drives like nothing else. You'll find yourself taking detours home to look for those fun and twisty roads. You may also volunteer to drive when friends and family go out, enjoying effortless acceleration away from traffic. The 2022 Porsche Cayenne is an excellent pick if you want a sports car but need an SUV.
Take a high-end sports car, add another set of doors and an SUV chassis, and you have the Cayenne. The large signature headlights and purposeful grille lead to a chiseled and athletic design that is a no-compromise blend of art and utility. The standard SUV body looks like it's in action even when parked, and the optional Cayenne Coupe model shortens the overall exterior with a sleek and bold rear roofline. Every time you drive past a row of large windows, you'll look over and check out that profile.
There are a stunning 19 trim levels available for the 2022 Porsche Cayenne. Look for a turbo V6 in the base model all the way up to a twin-turbo V8 in the GTS. The Platinum Edition adds satin exterior trim and exclusive 21-inch wheels, while Premium, Sport Chrono, and Off-Road packages add unique flavors. If you can't find the exact options you want in a base trim level, look out for used models with additional options and custom touches.
Just because it has a pretty face doesn't mean the Porsche Cayenne can't do real work. With powerful engines matched to a tough eight-speed automatic and AWD, the Cayenne can climb rugged mountain roads or haul all your heavy toys. The 2022 Porsche Cayenne (all engines and trims except Turbo S E-Hybrid) has a maximum estimated towing capacity of 7,700 lbs when properly equipped.
The 2022 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid combines high performance with green consciousness and rocks a turbocharged V6 and an electric motor for a combined 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. That's good enough for a zero to 60 sprint in just 4.7 seconds (when new). Yet this same model can achieve an EPA-estimated 46 combined MPGe (electric)/21 combined MPG (gas).
