2022 BMW M4: Potent performance mixed with practicality
Shoppers with a penchant for performance would do well to check out the 2022 BMW M4. It gets an abundance of power from its twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine and slices through turns with thrilling agility. At the same time, this sport coupe is practical and convenient thanks to relatively spacious rear seats and a usable trunk. For 2022, the M4 is available with BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system, which has never before been offered on either the M4 or M3. Even better, drivers can switch between rear- or all-wheel-drive whenever they like. Also new for 2022 is a convertible variant that is available in the more powerful Competition trim with all-wheel drive.
As enamored as we are with the M4's strong performance, we continue to struggle with its exaggerated grille. Calling it polarizing seems generous since we've yet to find someone willing to defend it. Looks aside, the M4 is a strong alternative to sport coupes such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Audi RS 5, and Porsche 718 Cayman.

What We Like
Power and acceleration: With up to 503 horsepower available, the BMW M4 sprints to 60 mph in only 3.7 seconds and covers the quarter mile in 11.6 seconds. That's comparable to V8-powered rivals such as the Chevrolet Corvette and Audi RS 5. Achieving that impressive acceleration is easy with built-in launch control that expertly maximizes traction.
Sharp handling: This well-balanced coupe's sticky high-performance tires let it corner with the kind of precision and confidence expected of any top-tier sports car. The standard adaptive suspension allows the driver to adjust the stiffness of the ride to suit road conditions or soften it for improved comfort.
Space and convenience: Most sport coupes have either tiny rear seats or none at all. The BMW M4 bucks that trend by offering surprisingly usable rear space. There's plenty of room for young occupants and adult passengers will be fine in those seats for shorter trips. For added practicality, the trunk can hold up to 12 cubic feet, which is comparable to some family sedans.
What Needs Improvement
Styling: Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder, but this BMW's grille is one of the most polarizing styling decisions in all of automotive history. We've yet to find anyone other than the Bavarian carmaker who is drawn to the oversized vertical grille or even willing to defend it. That's too bad because the rest of the M4 is attractive and muscular.
