The 2019 BMW M4 artfully blends performance and comfort
Most sports coupes can deliver stirring performance or a comfortable ride, but rarely can they do both. The 2019 BMW M4 is one such vehicle, equally suited to the racetrack as to the daily commute. There's plenty of power from the turbocharged six-cylinder, with 425 horsepower on tap in the base model and 444 hp if you spring for the optional Competition package. Handling is another strength, and the adaptive suspension means the ride quality won't be too rough when you're just cruising.
For 2019, the M4 returns largely unchanged. Apple CarPlay® has been added to the standard features list along with parking sensors that take away any guesswork when parking. These add to an already long list of advantages that make the M4 a standout among rivals that include the Mercedes-AMG C 63 coupe and Audi RS 5. As much as we love the Benz's V8 growl, the M4 is the driver's choice for overall performance.

What We Like
Performance: Overall performance is very strong and there's ample power to launch the M4 to 60 mph in only 4.3 seconds. Slowing it down is equally easy, especially if you get the optional carbon-ceramic brakes. Handling is also praiseworthy, and high cornering speeds are easily achieved on a smooth curvy road.
Comfort: The adaptive suspension lets the driver select a softer ride for more comfort or firm up the dampers for sportier handling. The optional Competition package stiffens the ride further, so choose accordingly. Helping matters are well-shaped front seats that provide plenty of side bolstering to keep you in place when cornering.
Well-built interior: The cabin's straightforward design gives the M4 a sporty seriousness that seems appropriate for its capabilities and price. There's a sturdy feel to every part of the interior and material quality is excellent for the class. Even on a bumpy road, there's no trace of any creaks or squeaks. The M4 is an example of an interior done right.
What Needs Improvement
Driver engagement: The BMW M4 may turn in some impressive numbers in testing, but that doesn't tell the whole story. The engine and exhaust sound great when you're driving exceptionally hard, but at lower speeds the annoying drone is far less inspiring. We're also missing the kind of steering feel that previous BMWs were famous for. By contrast, this M4 feels rather numb and disconnected through the steering wheel.
