The Jaguar XF is a comfortable and sophisticated midsize luxury sedan that competes against rivals like the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. That German trio all offer engines with more horsepower than even the XF’s most potent powertrain, a 380-horsepower supercharged V6 coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. That’s OK because the charms of the XF are found in its roomy cabin, sizable trunk, and, most importantly, its sporty handling and balanced suspension.
The base engine is a 247-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder, though optional powertrains include a 296-hp version of this same turbo-four, a 180-hp turbocharged diesel engine, and the 380-hp supercharged V6 in the S trim. All except the XF S can be had in rear- or all-wheel drive configuration—in the S, AWD is standard. There is even a wagon variant, dubbed the Sportback, that comes with the V6 and AWD. For the 2019 model year, the XF features a larger 10-inch touchscreen that’s available with smartphone connectivity, and the 300 Sport trim joins the lineup.

Engine choices: The XF allows a luxury-sedan shopper to prioritize price, fuel economy, or power. The base turbo-four is perfectly capable, the turbo diesel sips fuel, and the supercharged V6 provides the best straight-line thrills when you punch the gas pedal.
Ride quality, steering feel: Driving the XF, you realize that balance is more important than bags of horsepower. Quick reflexes and a firm but supple suspension make the XF both entertaining and relaxing in all sorts of driving conditions.
Practicality: A Jaguar might not spring to mind when you think of practical automobiles, yet the XF’s roomy interior and large trunk are major plus points. The seats are supportive and standard features include dual-zone climate control and an 11-speaker Meridian stereo.
Interior quality: The overall design and layout of the XF cabin is fine, though a number of rival sedans deliver a higher degree of interior luxury and refinement. These quality quirks and small details are something you’d notice every day.
