Generation Overview

The fifth generation of the Toyota 4Runner included a change from the number of available engines, removing the V8 engine previously available. Though a 2.7L inline-four engine was available in the first year of the fifth generation, it was removed in the following year. Toyota's A-TRAC became available across the board in this generation, where a wheel that is slipping automatically brakes and sends the power it was receiving to other wheels that still have traction, improving overall performance in off-road and slippery conditions. The TRD Pro trim level was introduced with this generation with the 2015 model year, delivering superior off-road options for drivers who want to hit the trails. A 2013 facelift provided new front and rear fascias, projector headlamps and clear-lens LED tail lamps, along with interior updated including a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, Toyota's Optitron instrument cluster and changes to the center dash and instrument stack.

Fun to drive!

This SUV is so much fun to drive! I love the big engine sound when it starts and you sit up high and have good visibility. It does handle like a truck but that's exactly what I like about it. It is not boring! Sometimes I just like to drive without having anywhere to go because it is so nice to drive. This is my third SUV and first 4 runner and while I liked my other SUVs I never enjoyed driving like I do now. I am a 55 year old housewife and my husband would have let me buy whatever I wanted but this was the one for me.

Pros

  • Reliability: Gets excellent reliability from Consumer Reports
  • Styling: Love the way it looks
  • Ride and Handling: So much fun!

Solid with Style

Toyota. Then you add the unmistakable style of a 4Runner. The quality you can feel when you crack it up and drive it. It just feels solid. No tin can feel. You can see the master workmanship everywhere in this vehicle. Friends and family who ride with me have the same impression of the 4Runner that I have. The ride is so smooth and almost relaxing for a vehicle with a ten inch ground clearance. Cannot ever go back to low tin can rides again.

Pros

  • Value: This is the quality and reliability you want in a vehicle.
  • Cost to Maintain: You can maintain this vehicle with Toyota quality care at every Toyota dealership. The prices are easy to meet to keep a 4Runner in top shape/if it ever breaks it will not break you.

Very nice off road/on road SUV

If you are looking for medium size Sport SUV that capable to bring you to the camping, fishing, hunting, skiing and other sport activities, you probably won't find anything better than 4Runner. I like that this year model has much better interior ergonomic. I could not fit in front seat of 4Runner of 2001. Now I fill very comfortable in this SUV. Cargo space is much bigger than I expected. I had Dodge Durango before this SUV and it is bigger than 4Runner. But when I packed for my vacation trip to the other state, I was pleased with size of the cargo space. It handling is pretty good and I did several long trips on 4Runner. Great SUV. I don't have any complains

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: Pretty good for medium size 4 wheel drive SUV
  • Cargo Space: It is much more than I expected, after owning before bigger SUV I am glad that I choose this SUV
  • Interior Space: This year model much more ergonomic than 2001 models of 4Runners
