2020 BMW M2 offers big power in a small car
BMW specializes in zippy and engaging vehicles, including the high-performance rear-wheel-drive 2020 M2 coupe. Offered in one generously equipped trim, the M2 Competition, the M2 stays the course for model year 2020. After 2019’s major overhaul, which included a new engine, all BMW had to do for 2020 was wash, rinse, and repeat.
Under the hood of the M2, there's a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic to drive the rear wheels. A turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine makes 405 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, plenty to enjoy for a quick joyride or longer jaunt. Power is one thing, however, and handling quite another — happily, the 2020 delivers both in spades. It’s like a ride at your favorite amusement park that you want to experience again and again.
We like the sedan-like entry height of the M2, which makes it easier to slide behind the wheel than a low-slung sports car. With the M2, you get sports-car attitude with a practical approach.

What We Like
Performance: Powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder making 405 horsepower, the 2020 M2 comes with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, although a seven-speed automatic transmission is also available. The available M Driver’s package raises the speed limiter from 155 mph to 174 mph.
Interior: A simple symmetric layout makes it easy to learn the controls on the M2 dashboard. The sport seats are comfortable and supportive, with adjustable bolsters and heat. A crisp 8.8-inch display sits atop the dash and offers excellent placement for eye movement. Need a heated steering wheel? Look for the Executive package, which also includes a wireless device charger and more.
Storage: For a compact car, the M2 serves up an impressive 13.8 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk. The cabin's center-console storage bin holds small items, while there's also door pocket storage and an ample glove box.
What Needs Improvement
Comfort: Be thankful that the seats are plush and supportive because the ride is extra firm. The M2 is fast and the chassis is most comfortable on the track, where its attributes can really shine. A bit of a rough ride on typical roads is the price you’ll pay for that track-happy functionality.
