The 2019 Kia Sedona is now an even smoother operator

The 2019 Kia Sedona proves minivans don’t have to drive or look like a boring box on wheels. Easy to get in and out of and able to haul a load full of cargo when needed, the handy Sedona even possesses a (modest) wild side. This is courtesy of its strong 276-horsepower V6 engine. For the 2019 model year, the V6 is paired to a new eight-speed automatic. This upgraded gearbox helps improve the front-wheel-drive Sedona’s EPA-estimated fuel economy in both city and highway driving.

Kia has also tweaked the exterior and cabin styling of the 2019 Sedona, though the newly standard seven-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration is what will have minivan fans cheering. This is a very simple and intuitive system, with clear menus and quick response times. New options this model year include a driver attention monitor, wireless device charging, and a rear-seat entertainment system. All said, these improvements make the Sedona a worthy rival to minivan stalwarts like the Toyota Sienna, Honda Odyssey, and Chrysler Pacifica.

What We Like

Power and improved economy: We’ve always been fans of the Sedona’s peppy V6 engine. Yet fuel economy lagged the competition. The new-for-2019 eight-speed automatic gives that mpg a welcome boost.

Cabin quality: Kia missed the memo stating minivans must sacrifice style for function. The quality and design of Sedona’s interior are first-rate. The optional reclining second-row captain’s chairs with built-in footrests could cause arguments over who gets to snag a spot in them during long road trips.

Smartphone connectivity: Not only does the 2019 Sedona now come standard with a convenient seven-inch touchscreen, you also get Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto thrown into the mix. These “phone-ey” features are exceptionally valuable to many car shoppers.

What Needs Improvement

Cargo volume: If only Kia could do something about the nonremovable second-row seating conundrum. No matter if you choose the bench seat or dual captain’s chairs, the second-row seats in the Sedona are staying put. This limits ultimate load-lugging capability.
