About the Audi RS5

Vehicle Summary

The Audi RS5 was released in 2010 as an offshoot of the popular Audi A5 coupe. Specifically, the RS5 was designed as a "sport performance" version of the A5, offering a brawny engine and standard all-wheel drive. This unique luxury sportback boasts a two-door coupe style (though it was also available as a convertible for some of its earlier model years) while offering plenty of legroom (even in the back seat) for up to five people total. Meanwhile, a rear hatchback door allows for easy access to an additional 12 cubic feet of cargo storage in the 2018 model.

Currently in its second generation of production after coming off a fresh redesign for the 2018 model year, the Audi RS5 is a great choice for drivers who want to enjoy a well-appointed interior, a peppy engine, and standard all-wheel drive.

Q: What engine is in the Audi RS5?

A: Engine offerings for the Audi RS5 vary by model year. The 2014 RS5, for example, comes standard with a 4.2L V8 engine at a whopping 450 hp. For the redesigned 2018 RS5, however, a new turbocharged 2.9L V6 engine at 444 hp is standard.

Q: Is the Audi RS5 turbocharged?

A: On the second and most recently Audi RS5 generation (2018-present), a turbocharged engine is included. Earlier models do not come with a turbocharged engine, though they are equipped with a powerful V8.

Q: What does "RS" stand for on an Audi?

A: The "RS" technically stands for "RennSport" in German, which translates to "Rally Sport" or "Racing Sport" in English.

Q: Why is the Audi RS5 called a sportback?

A: The RS5 is commonly referred to as a "sportback" vehicle because it encompasses the characteristics of a hatchback, coupe, and sedan all at once. This includes the sloped roofline that would be found on a coupe and the spacious interior of a sedan, plus the rear door of a traditional hatchback.

Audi RS5 Trim Configurations

The Audi RS5 makes things easier for shoppers by being offered in one trim level for each model year/generation. The biggest difference between the RS5's first generation (2010-2015) and second generation (2018-present) is the change in engine. Specifically, the RS5 switched from a standard 4.2L V8 to a turbocharged 2.9L V6.

No regrets, no buyer's remorse

I had been looking for this model for months and happened to find one on the CarMax website. The car had to be transferred from another store but it was worth the wait.

  • Power: 4.2 L, 450 HP V-8, this is a fast car!
  • Styling: For a sports car it has a very sophisticated style.
  • Value: For what I got in this car, I'm very happy with the purchase price.

- Mitch Plemmons, 2015 Audi RS5

So much car for so little money

The Audi RS5 is the best performance Audi could put in a car at the time, it is miles above comparable cars. The raw performance of this car is like nothing else, it is fast, it handles corners like its glued to the road and stops fast and hard too. They didn't stop there, they loaded it with luxury such as adaptive cruise and rain sensing wipers. The little refinements all over too like grocery hooks in the trunk make you appreciate the car every day you drive it.

  • Power: 450HP is nothing to sneeze at and car easily beat most cars on the road
  • Value: All the performance, power and luxury for the money is something that is hard to beat
  • Styling: Maybe one of the sexiest cars on the road, the mesh grills, the pop up spoiler, the widebody

  • Ride and Handling: Fine handling comes with the trade off of a rough ride, you feel the road
  • Fuel Economy: The fuel mileage can be good, I get 29 on long highway trips, but this car encourages you to use the gas pedal and mileage suffers
  • Interior Space: The rear seats are useless, there isn't much in the way of glove box or center console storage.
