The redesigned Ford Mustang rides and handles better than ever before
Everything old is new again, or at least that’s the case with the completely redesigned 2015 Ford Mustang coupe and convertible. Ford’s long-running pony car gets upgrades like a much-improved interior, an independent rear suspension, and three engine choices including a new turbocharged four-cylinder. Now in its sixth generation and 50th model year, this new Mustang can still be had as a coupe or convertible.
Similar to the previous Mustang, a V6 engine does duty as the base powertrain and delivers 300 horsepower to the rear wheels. A new-for-2015 turbocharged four-cylinder engine, dubbed the EcoBoost®, is now optional. And of course there is the riotous 5.0-liter V8 that comes with the GT model. It now churns out 435 hp. All three engines can be paired to a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. Want to do some American muscle car cross shopping? Then consider rivals like the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger.

What We Like
Independent rear suspension: After five decades, Ford has finally graced the Mustang with an honest-to-goodness independent rear suspension. The outdated solid rear axle of the previous version will not be missed. A smoother ride and sharper steering help to firmly drive this point home.
Turbocharged four-cylinder engine: This is an intriguing choice among the Mustang’s three available powertrains. With 310 hp on tap, the EcoBoost engine has about the same degree of performance that V8-powered Mustangs offered not all that long ago.
Throwback styling: Ford didn’t need to reinvent the wheel when it came time to give this sixth-generation Mustang a shape that honors previous models yet still looks fresh and modern. The slimmer headlights and pointier prow of this Mustang make it look more aggressive.
What Needs Improvement
Best enjoyed in the front seats: Ford can only work so much magic when redesigning its much-loved Mustang. Like the model before it, space in the second row is fine for kids, patient adults, or pint-size pets. Anything (or anyone) else will be cramped.
