The Land Rover Discovery is a luxurious off-road champ for those who appreciate its charms
The 2023 Land Rover Discovery is a midsize luxury SUV known for go-anywhere capability thanks to its tenacious standard all-wheel-drive hardware. For 2023 the Land Rover Discovery sports a new, vastly improved infotainment system, putting it on more equal footing against rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE, BMW X5, Lincoln Nautilus, and Genesis GV80.
Newly added standard features for the 2023 model year include adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, and tri-zone climate control. Topping the range is the new-for-2023 Metropolitan Edition.
The entry-level powertrain is a 296-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic transmission, with a 355-hp turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine and mild hybrid system as an available upgrade. On the road, the Discovery is highly competent and there’s adult-friendly space in the first and second rows.
Downsides include a small third row of seats best suited for kids, and steering that is tuned for off-road use, which means it doesn’t have the accuracy found in some rivals. There are also some interior quirks, such as huge headrests that block rearward visibility.

What We Like
Off-road adventures await: The Land Rover Discovery can go places that would leave many rival SUVs stranded and stuck. All-terrain prowess is part of Land Rover’s engineering DNA, and this holds true with the Discovery. All-wheel drive is standard, and there are multiple drive modes for tackling all sorts of driving conditions.
Cabin quality: The handsome interior of the Discovery lives up to its luxury label. Land Rover has done an excellent job of creating a cabin that’s elegant and more than a match for posh rivals from the likes of Lexus, BMW, Audi, and Genesis.
Highway ride and performance: The Discovery has a smooth highway ride and gets down the road quickly, especially when equipped with the optional turbocharged six-cylinder. And if towing is important, know that the Discovery’s max rating of 8,200 pounds (when properly equipped) is above average for its segment.
What Needs Improvement
Interior details need fine tuning: Work remains to be done when it comes to refining some cabin controls and other details. The huge headrests impinge on rear visibility, the touch-sensitive climate controls are distracting, and space is extremely limited for anyone squashed into the third row.
