About the 2016 Ford Explorer

Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Ford Explorer is a midsize crossover SUV that has been in production as either a crossover or a midsize SUV for nearly 30 years. It features a wide range of specific 4WD options to help in a range of different driving circumstances, whether dealing with wet roads, mud, sand or other difficult conditions. Available third-row seating makes the 2016 Ford Explorer a great option for families on the go, while fold-flat seats in the second and third rows provide up to 81.7 cubic feet of space, making it a good work vehicle when you require more power on rough roads to reach a job site. The range of available engine and towing combinations makes it simple to choose an Explorer model that competes well with hybrid SUVs or a powerful V6 that will help you tow a larger trailer with materials and equipment wherever you need to take it.

Ford also included a range of voice-activated features in the 2016 Explorer, making it easier to keep your eyes on the road and operate your radio, climate control system, navigation, and available apps without taking your hands off of the wheel. With highest-in-class headroom for the second row and legroom for the third row, the 2016 Ford Explorer provides a roomy option for large families that may otherwise feel cramped in a standard crossover or worry about performance in a minivan. In tight locations, you can see around corners by 60° with Ford's exclusive front 180° camera with washer, while the BLIS® Blind Spot Information System notifies you if someone is in a hard-to-see location and adaptive cruise control provides four pre-set distance gaps.

FAQ

Q: Is the 2016 Ford Explorer a rear-wheel drive vehicle?

A: No, the most basic version of the 2016 Ford Explorer is a front-wheel drive, but this vehicle is capable of much more than that. A range of available 4WD options provides solid traction across a wide range of surface conditions, whether you're dealing with snow, sand or mud.

Q: What engines are available in the 2016 Ford Explorer?

A: The different trims of the 2016 Ford Explorer include three different engine options. The 3.5L Ti-VCT V6 features 290 hp and 255 lb-ft of torque, the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 produces 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque, while the green-conscious 2.3L EcoBoost inline-four provides 280 mp and 310 lb-ft of torque.

Q: How much can a 2016 Ford Explorer haul?

A: Depending on the model you select, the 2.3L EcoBoost engine can be paired with the Class II Trailer Tow Package to haul up to 3,000 pounds or pairing either of the 3.5L engines with the Class III Trailer Tow Package to provide up to 5,000 pounds of towing power when properly equipped.1 Combined with anti-sway technology and Hill Descent Control, towing with the Explorer is a breeze.

Q: What driver assistance options are available in the 2016 Ford Explorer?

A: For towing, standard trailer sway control reduces engine speed and applies the brakes when trailer sway is detected, while Hill Descent Control makes it easier to prevent picking up too much speed on downhill grades. Intelligent 4WD controls how much tires are allowed to slip based on your specific chosen terrain. Available heated and cooled first-row seats with Active Motion® massage makes long trips easier, while voice-activated Sync® technology keeps you comfortable and connected.

Q: How many people can the 2016 Ford Explorer seat?

A: With the available third-row seat, the 2016 Ford Explorer can seat up to seven passengers, six if you decide to go with the second-row bucket seat option. Flat-fold seats make entry and exit from the third row simple, while the Explorer's roomy interior makes even a full cabin a comfortable ride.

1Various factors may impact towing capacity, including weight of passengers, cargo, and options/accessories.

Generation Overview

The fifth generation of the Ford Explorer provided a breakaway from the traditional midsize SUV role the model had traditionally belonged to, moving into the midsize SUV Crossover class. The chassis moved to the D4 platform, modified from its prior D3 platform in the prior generation. To create a floating-roof effect, Ford added blacked-out A, B and D pillars into the design, while stepped-style headlights and tail lamps provided a fresh appearance to the exterior. The new generation included a bevy of well-considered amenities and features available to improve the driving experience, including power-adjustable pedals with memory, active parking assist, adaptive cruise control, a power liftgate, push button start, remote engine start, heated and cooled front seats, a wide range of updated audio options, rain-sensing wipers, LED tail lamps and an advanced in-dash navigation system.2

2Remote start functionality may require the purchase of a subscription plan and/or a compatible device like a smart phone. See the owner’s manual or manufacturer website for more information.

Nice suv a couple problems

When I bought this truck the first week I found out I had 2 issues that needed to be fix and last month in February I was told there is another 2 problems that I need to fix but I cannot afford to do so. I didn't think I would have so many problems with this vehicle especially since I've only had it about 5 months now.
