2016 Toyota Prius Julie Wormhoudt - Ludington, MI 01/30/2017

I love my rearview backup camera, the ride is so smooth, it's quiet, get more than 50 MPG and it's beautiful!

2016 Toyota Prius Overview

The Toyota Prius has really made a name for itself over the years, with the first fuel-saving Prius hitting the market in 1997. Today, the Toyota Prius is synonymous with fuel economy and eco-friendliness. Over the years, the basic Prius sedan has expanded to include additional designs like the hatchback, sub-compact, plug-in, and liftback. Today, Prius models account for three of the top 10 fuel-efficient vehicles in the United States, with the 2016 model being among the most fuel-efficient in the world.

2016 Toyota Prius History

The 2016 Toyota Prius is part of the fourth and current generation and boasts a significantly different design than its 2015 counterpart. Specifically, the new design focuses on improved aerodynamics and reduced wind resistance to create better fuel economy. Interestingly enough, the vehicle itself is about two and a half inches longer in size than previous models and sits about an inch lower to the ground as well.

Additional changes in the 2016 Prius as compared to previous models include:

  • Use of higher-strength steel
  • A new intake system
  • More efficient exhaust system
  • Independent rear suspension

How It Drives

The redesign of the 2016 Toyota Prius did a lot of favors in terms of the vehicle's maneuverability and handling. With a sleeker and more aerodynamic body, the steering is tighter and more accurate than ever before. Toyota also made numerous improvements to ensure noise reduction in the 2016 model (this was a common complaint in previous model years) - and it shows. With a smoother and quieter ride, as well as improved braking, driving an eco-friendly vehicle has never been more fun. And while you probably won't be blowing any doors off other cars on the freeway, you'll still be able to hit 60 mph from a standstill in less than 10 seconds. Not bad for a hybrid.

Used 2016 Toyota Prius Value

MSRP for the 2016 Toyota Prius starts at around $25,030 and runs up to about $30,835, depending on whether you opt for the Advanced package and additional safety features. Given the included features and the unbeatable fuel economy, however, the 2016 Toyota Prius offers a lot of bang for your buck, especially when compared to its competitors like the Chevrolet Volt and the Ford C-Max. If you plan on buying new, however, you should be aware that the Prius is not known to retain its value in the long-term quite as well as its competitors, which might influence your decision if you're not looking for a long-term vehicle.

Design & Performance

The 2016 Toyota Prius is likely one of the only vehicles to see a downgrade in engine power when compared to its previous model year. In fact, the 2016 model was released with a three-horsepower decrease in output. This has allowed for a more fuel-efficient vehicle overall. In terms of the overall vehicle design, the overall shape of the vehicle hasn't changed much, but it does feature:

  • A more modern design
  • Bolder curbside presence
  • Lower hoodline and better forward sightlines

And considering drivers of previous model years of the Prius asked for improved handling, this is another area where the 2016 model has seen significant improvements. On the other hand, the lower profile may make some taller drivers uncomfortable, requiring quite a bit of ducking to get inside.

Powertrain & Engine

The Toyota Prius has never been known for its power; in fact, a powerful, turbocharged engine would negate its entire purpose for existence. Under the hood of this efficient little machine, you'll find a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine that clocks out at 91 horsepower and 105 lb-ft torque. As a hybrid, it also features a permanent magnet electric motor with 71 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque. Still, where it lacks in power, the 2016 Toyota Prius more than makes up in fuel efficiency. Depending on your trim and specific model, you'll score up to 58 mpg on the highway and 53 mpg on city streets. Still, with a slightly slower acceleration than previous models, drivers will want to exercise care when merging onto freeway on-ramps.

Body Style & Interior Comfort

Compared to previous model years, the 2016 Toyota Prius sees some huge interior upgrades that drivers have welcomed with open arms. The cheap, plastic trim of previous models has been replaced with soft-touch surfaces and impressive touches of sleek chrome. Other upgrades include:

  • Two color info screens
  • Synthetic in some trims
  • Reduced center console height for a more open cabin

In terms of the body styling, not much has changed from the 2015 Prius with the exception of the lower profile and a few additional creases in the body panels. Overall, if you're looking for a fuel-efficient car that's still fun to drive, you can't go wrong with a 2016 Toyota Prius.
