HOWEVER- I have developed an ABS Anti-lock brake and skid module problem and the estimate to fix it is over $6000. These cars are wonderful until a part needs replacing. Many parts are thousands of dollars. My dash lights go off intermittently and they have for years, although there is a way to reset them to come back on. It is a faulty part and Toyota offered a 9 year recall for the part, but I didn't unearth that fact until recently. I wish someone had told me to check for recalls back when it first started happening. I still love my car though, and the idea of having to get a new car because I cannot afford repairs makes me sad.

Popular Years

2013-2015 Toyota Prius (Third Generation)

Toyota kicked off the third generation of the Prius with the introduction of the 2009 Toyota Prius model and continued producing third-generation Priuses through the 2015 model. Beginning with the vehicle's third generation, Toyota offered a number of new standard features for the Prius, the most significant of which was the ability to select between three different driving modes - EV mode for electric-only operation at low speeds, ECO mode for improved fuel efficiency under normal driving conditions, and Power mode for improved performance. Other important specs and features that you will find on the 2015 Toyota Prius, for example, include:

  • A standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display
  • Standard push-button start and remote illuminated entry
  • A standard vehicle proximity notification system
  • An EPA estimated 48 mpg combined city/highway for the 2015 Toyota Prius equipped with a 1.8L four-cylinder engine1

2016-Present Toyota Prius (Fourth Generation)

The 2016 Toyota Prius marked the beginning of the Prius's fourth and most current generation. The 2016 Toyota Prius received changes to the vehicle's exterior that were designed to lower the vehicle's center of gravity and improve its structural rigidity. Toyota also rebranded its plug-in hybrid model Prius as the Toyota Prius Prime starting with the 2016 model.

In 2018, the Toyota Prius was given another facelift, with Toyota making both interior and exterior design changes to the 2018 model. Other important features and specs that you can look forward to if you choose to purchase a 2018 Toyota Prius include:

  • A standard backup camera
  • A standard 6.1-inch touchscreen display
  • A standard Entune™ 6-speaker audio system
  • A standard smart-flow climate control system with pollen filtration
  • An EPA estimated 52 mpg combined city/highway for the 2018 Toyota Prius equipped with a 1.8L four-cylinder engine1

Reviews for Toyota Prius

Great car for saving gas and traveling

I took the family on vacation in this car. We drove over 1,600 miles which include to, from and while we were there. The total gas cost was only $75! Smooth ride too. Mine is the Prius 3 which has the JBL sound system which sounds great! I'm used to driving Grand Caravans so it was a big switch for me in terms of size but I'd do it all over again! Just waiting for the day they make hybrid minivans and SUVs.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy:
  • Reliability:
  • Technology and Entertainment:

Cons

  • Cabin Noise:
  • Power:
  • Weather Versatility:

Excellent car, lacking CarPlay

The 2019 Prius is a great vehicle with good room, power, and handling. The visibility is great, and it's a bit higher up than a sedan so it's really easy to drive, too. The only issue is the limited electronics. Without CarPlay, you have limited functionality with your phone, and what you do have does not work very well. Additionally, the Qi charger is very finicky, but in my experience most are that are installed in vehicles. Overall, this is the third I've owned (2008, 2012, and now 2019) and it has had tremendous improvements over time. I love it!

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: It drives easily and is comfortable on trips
  • Visibility: The shape, size, and quantity of windows lets you see A LOT
  • Styling: I have the light gray interior (Toyota calls it moonstone) and it looks great! It's actually a lot easier to keep clean than you would think

Cons

  • Technology and Entertainment: CarPlay would be a big improvement. Toyota added this as standard in 2020 for all Prius models, and sadly there is no backwards compatibility like there is with the Camry or Sienna

- Austin M, 2019 Toyota Prius

Prius Repair Cost

I love my Prius- it gets great mileage and is comfortable- it has been a great car for five years.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: I get aroung 40 mpg and I love that it is a hybrid.
  • Reliability: It has been a very reliable car until I hit 100,000.
  • Ride and Handling: Rides smoothly and is quiet.

Cons

  • Cost to Maintain: Repairs are expensive!!!
  • Braking: If the Anti-Lock Braking system goes out and you need a new Actuator, you are looking at paying $2000+ for that one part. It is a complex repair so the cost of labor is high as well.
  • Reliability: My car has been reliable for five years, but all of a sudden it is developing several costly issues. I had two diagnosis and both were different. It is a complex vehicle because so many parts rely on other parts for it to work!
