2024 Toyota Prius continues its reign as leading hybrid
Toyota completely redesigned the Prius hybrid for 2023, and the 2024 model year is a direct carryover with no changes. This generation of Prius is shorter, longer, and wider than previous years, with a sleek silhouette that suggests speed. However, the biggest changes are inside the car, with a more conventional dashboard layout than before.
Under the hood, the Prius engine is now a 2.0-liter, and when paired with a new electric motor the Prius boasts 196 horsepower on all-wheel-drive models and 194 horsepower on front-wheel-drive models. The AWD system uses an extra electric motor to drive the rear wheels. The new performance does not sacrifice fuel economy. The 2024 Prius gets an EPA-estimated 57 mpg combined in the front-wheel-drive base LE trim or 54 mpg combined with AWD. Higher trim levels are rated for 52 mpg combined with front-wheel drive or 49 mpg combined with AWD. Fuel economy figures are based on EPA estimates for when vehicle sold as new. Actual mileage will vary based on things like battery age, vehicle condition and history, driving and charging habits, accessory use, and driving conditions. Battery capacity may decrease with time and use. See fueleconomy.gov for more info.

What We Like
Fuel economy: The new Prius is still an industry leader in fuel economy. As a vehicle designed to be a hybrid, the Prius delivers fuel economy of better than 50 mpg in most configurations. Only the heavier luxury trim levels with all-wheel drive fall slightly below the 50 mpg mark.
Good acceleration: With the new 2.0-liter gasoline engine and an available electric motor creating all-wheel drive, the new Prius offers better acceleration and handling than prior generations. If you're a longtime Prius driver, you'll appreciate the additional performance of the 2024 Prius.
Advanced driver assistance: As a 2024 model, the Prius offers a full slate of modern driver-assistance features. The lane keeping assistance system keeps the hybrid centered in its lane effectively, and acceleration and braking are smooth when using adaptive cruise control. Another feature, Proactive Driving Assist, provides subtle hints to the driver in everyday situations. For example, if traffic slows ahead of you, the Prius will start to brake very subtly as you lift off the gas as a hint to start slowing down. It also flashes an LED strip on the dashboard if traffic in front of you pulls away.
What Needs Improvement
Rear seat room: The downside of the Prius' sleek new exterior is that there's less headroom in the rear seat. Taller passengers will not be comfortable back there, and it also limits cargo capacity.
