Popular Years

2013 (Second-Generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 represents the last model year for sale of the second-generation full-sized pickup truck that debuted back in 2007. This solid pickup truck comes available in two-door regular cab, four-door double cab and four-door crew cab configurations with a short, standard or long box. The 2013 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also comes in several trim levels – WT, LS, LT, XFE and LTZ. The LTZ trim features its own unique dashboard.

Like prior generations of Chevrolet Silverado 1500, the second-generation model relies on the Vortec® family of V6 and V8 engines, starting with the 190 hp Vortec 4.3L V6. V8 engine options include the Vortec 4.8L and 5.3L mills, with 302 and 315 hp, respectively. An optional 6.2L V8 engine offers an estimated 10,600-lb trailering capacity when properly equipped.1 There’s also a two-mode hybrid version of the Silverado 1500.

Here are a few notable standard features that this generation offers:

  • 4.8L V8 engine with 302 hp
  • Automatic locking rear differential
  • Rear vision camera
  • Active Fuel Management (on the 5.3L V8 engine)

2014-2018 (Third-Generation Chevrolet Silverado 1500)

The third generation of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 made its debut in 2014. Like its predecessor, the third-generation model comes in three body styles – regular cab, double cab and crew cab – along with a short, standard or long truck box. The 2014 model marks the arrival of the High Country trim, slotted above the LTZ and equipped with premium features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and power-articulating running boards. Unlike the previous generation, the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500’s dashboard design is shared among all trim levels.

The third-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 has also seen its fair share of changes, including a change from the Vortec to the EcoTec® family of V6 and V8 engines and the introduction of an eight-speed automatic transmission for use on the EcoTec 6.2L V8 engine in 2015. The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 also received a significant facelift for the 2016 model year, featuring a redesigned front grille, the addition of LED tail lights and the availability of the eight-speed automatic with the 5.3L V8 engine. The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 became available for sale with several minor changes, including the addition of a capless fuel filler neck and the introduction of several special edition trims, including the Redline and All Star Edition.

Notable standard features for the 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 include:

Excellent Price and Great Ride

Carmax took the hassle out of purchasing a vehicle as I didn't have to go through the lengthy process at our courthouse with taxes, tags and registration. In fact, the courthouse owed me a little bit of change when all was said and done. And, when we left Carmax in our Silverado, I didn't need to do anything except to make certain that our insurance was transferred from my 2013 Silverado to my 2016, and that was a walk in the park.

Pros

  • Fuel Economy: I have never seen a 5.3 liter V8 motor in any pickup get an average of 18 - 19 MPG, ever and it has even reached 21.5 MPG which is my new goal to beat.
  • Ride and Handling:
  • Technology and Entertainment:

Cons

  • Technology and Entertainment: I have nothing to report on any cons at this time.

More than I had expected

When I went looking for an upgrade from my 2013 Silverado, I had looked at many different dealers and was not impressed with any of them until I checked out CarMax. When I pulled up the year, make and style, I found what I was looking for pertaining to the price range, features, milage and color. The moment I laid eyes on one particular Silverado, I requested an appointment to go an hours drive to this CarMax to look over their Silverado. I received word from them that they had accepted my request and stated that it would be ready form me upon arrival. It was, I was greeted by Paul and went through all of the standard procedures directly after test driving the truck which I fell in love with immediately. I had a price in mind for my trade in and they exceeded it, I had a payment limit I wanted to stay in and they came into my range without me having to tell them what it was and in the end, I drove the truck home!!! What really took me by surprise is that CarMax took care of ALL of the paperwork, meaning the vehicle's registration, fees, taxes, etc so the only thing I have to do is to go to our Licensing and Registration office in our courthouse and pickup the registration only. They also took care of our temporary registration to keep in the vehicle and included a copy of our proof of insurance that CarMax sent to our courthouse, also, until I receive word that it is time to go to the courthouse to pick up the paperwork. I have Always had to go through all of these procedures until we found CarMax. Now, a point of additional interest, I read a lot of reviews here and I have to say that those who gave poor reviews, well, not everyone can get along with businesses and personalities will clash. One must look inward to help understand any negative experiences and one key issue is presentation of one's self. I learned while I was in law enforcement that one's attitude makes a huge difference when it comes to the outcome of any meeting, confrontation. Expect to be treated the way one treats another is my experience so with this in mind, I do not personally believe that the negative reviews posted about CarMax are true, but this is my opinion. Thank You CarMax for making our purchase more pleasant and easier than any I have ever experienced!!!! At this time, I can Not think of any cons about our new truck!

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: I have yet to drive a vehicle that tracked as well as this vehicle and ease of keeping the vehicle stable under all wind conditions.
  • Technology and Entertainment: I really enjoy the many different info screens to obtain any and all information that I like to keep track of.
  • Cabin Noise: This is the quietest pickup I have ever driven or been in at highway speeds. I can hear sounds that I could Never hear in my previous pickup.

- Larry Van Syoc, 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Beautiful inside and out.

This a weekend use vehicle not a daily driver. With a full size crew cab and the with all the bells and whistles of the High country model without the HC price made this a no brainer. The smaller bed limits what I may need to haul as well as low gas mileage isn’t too concerning. The only reason I purchased the truck was to visit my family who live more than 5 hour away. A sedan is to uncomfortable to make a road trip of more the hour; and vehicle fills that need to arrive at my destination and ready to visit with out being in pain from the travel.

Pros

  • Ride and Handling: This is the smoothest riding vehicle I’ve owned and I have owned.
  • Cabin Noise: Almost non-existing. Super quiet
  • Seat Comfort: A/c and heated seats and with 6 way controls. Nice thigh support

Cons

  • Cargo Space: Small bed
  • Fuel Economy: The specs require a mid grade gas so the cost is higher to fill up is high. The mileage is not especially high. But I’m fine with it.
  • Technology and Entertainment: While tech is nice: too much tech leaves a margin of error grater then just an analog system. I’m not a digital fan and it’s too easy for manufacturers to implement what is called “ Planed Obsolescence’’ what is simply known as software updates.
